In 1975, women at #Cornell gave “sexual harassment” a name. By 1980, the #EEOC recognized it as prohibited sex discrimination. In 1986, the #SupremeCourt ruled hostile-work-environment harassment could violate Title VII. Language became law!!! #SheShed
The term
"sexual harassment" is only about 50 years old, having been coined in 1975 by a group of women at Cornell University.
1975
According to Cornell's archival history, the term "sexual harassment" emerged in 1975 after university employee Carmita Wood approached activists Lin Farley, Susan Meyer and Karen Sauvigne. Wood had resigned after experiencing years of unwanted advances from a supervisor and was later denied unemployment benefits. As the women discussed what had happened to her, they realized there was no widely recognized workplace term to describe the behavior.
Cornell credits Farley with coining the phrase.
Farley publicly used the new terminology while testifying before the New York City Commission on Human Rights on April 21, 1975.
Soon afterward, the group organized a Speak Out in Ithaca that attracted more than 250 women, and Working Women United was formally established in June. The term quickly became part of a much larger conversation out workplace rights and discriminatio

Meritor Savings Bank v. Vinson established that sexual harassment resulting in a hostile work environment could violate Title VTI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, helping shape workplace protections that remain significant today.

I have heard rumours that Richard Tice heads a company called Britain Means Business, that has no employees and sells no products but takes in very large donations from foreign based people and forwards them to Reform UK Ltd. I can't believe this is true, but if it is it should bring down Reform.

Agreed. OK, I grew up with just the basic Lego blocks, but this is absurd, as if assembling an IKEA table makes you a furniture designer. I note the capitalisation 'LEGO', something I'd expect from a press release or similar. Everyone else calls it 'Lego'.

This quote (thank you Bettina) is the essence of why I so admired Burnham’s speech. No one is denying it’s going to be incredibly hard to deliver on his agenda, but the UK will never tackle its problems effectively, if it’s not able to discuss them honestly - on the EU and much else besides.

I had to trust Muse with my most personal data, which included connecting it to my bank accounts and email. It's very easy to dismiss these voices as fringe and the discussion as feeding right-wing propaganda (which it does). But like the Greenfield bar story, anyone honest who has spent time in left spaces knows that these dynamics and people are very real and a problem that needs to be confronted.
