WELL NOW, would you look at that? A massive, 4-YEAR-LONG study of NEARLY 30 MILLION people in France found that individuals who received a COVID-19 mRNA vaccine had a 74% LOWER risk of death from severe COVID-19 compared to unvaccinated individuals and ZERO increased risk of all-cause mortality.

Oh my heart is so full reading about this. The US Colored Troops were huge in the story of emancipation and in the human dignity of enslaved Black people. For the first time they had weapons and uniforms, just like white men.

For those of you with day jobs where you're forced to use LLMs or be fired, good tip I gleaned this weekend, which is to tell the LLM to stop referring to itself using "I" pronouns and to eliminate the praise and other attempts to humanize itself. You get a much cleaner interaction w/o the marketing

I discovered today that some company tried to trademark "Blind Date With a Book" back in April. It looks like the US Patent & Trademark office has asked them for more proof of the uniqueness of their service, but I'm gobsmacked they even tried. (They still have the ™ on their website.)

East of Eden’s Lee is one of the first Asian American characters most of us encounter, also one of the first characters to let readers in on how and why he code-switches. Zoe was willing to take risks with Steinbeck’s material and trusted my research and intuitions. I hope you enjoy our results.

a key reason why rape culture persists is because men do not fear reprisals from *other men*. they do not expect other men to care if they raped someone. they do not expect other men to treat them poorly. they believe that most men will doubt a victim's story and demand evidence.

Pete is lost in terms of modern war. I use the example of this outgunned Ukrainian army officer who successfully terrorized a Russian unit for weeks because she "did the math." At the time, someone commented, "yeah, in combat, 'I did the math' beats 'I can do 100 pushups' every time."
Ukrainian female soldier: Okay, I said the idea is this: There is enough time to empty one full can of 32 grenades and be gone by the time the return mortar fire reaches us. I did the math.

Maybe we could also talk about the connection between shaming romance and discomfort with narratives around sexual assault, since romance is and has been for many years the genre of fiction that takes trauma and its aftermaths most seriously while creating stories in which healing is possible.

I’m sorry, but any writer who thinks like this doesn’t deserve the time or energy it would take me to properly refute them. You want to sneer at other writers? It tells me a whole lot more about you than it does about them. Craft is craft. Respect your colleagues. All the love to #Romancelandia ❤️
A supremely condescending post made by author Joyce Carol Oates on the social media platform X, which reads: “This is why AI-generated romance novels make perfect sense. Formulaic fiction doesn’t need to be written by hand, so to speak; what difference does it make if a machine “writes” it? There are machine-made clothes & there are custom-made clothes. They appeal to different consumers.”

I lost my only sibling, my big sister, to lymphoma 21 years ago yesterday. And I still have to stop myself, sometimes, from calling her number to tell her some piece of good news, or to get her advice. Hug the people you love. Hug them hard. Life's amazing and wonderful. And never long enough. ❤️
Susanna Kearsley's older sister, Kathryn, age 19, wearing a red jacket and standing at the railing of a ferry crossing Hong Kong harbour on a grey and misty day. Her back is to the camera, but her head is turned to the right, showing her face in profile. In the distance are the skyscrapers of Hong Kong, with the dark grey hills behind. It's an old photograph, taken by Susanna when the sisters travelled together on their own in 1982, twenty-three years before Kathryn's death from cancer, but Susanna always liked it, and has come to love it more now for the almost mythic feel of it, as though her sister's crossing over water in the Celtic sense, and passing to a new life on the other side.
