This is a purposeful conflation, imo, done as marketing & to ride the pop culture idea of AI. In doing so they've basically wrecked the public conception of AI so completely Trump just had to sign an order saying NO NOW IT HAS A DIFFERENT NAME and pre-existing AI research is left in the wreckage

A key component of the Cambridge Analytica outrage was your friends subjecting you to data theft without your consent or knowledge. Facebook is running the same playbook on your text messages. Even if you’re not on Meta properties, they’re ingesting your interactions.
Aten installed Muse on both his iPhone and a Mac mini that he uses to test out various Al agents and tech. It took Meta a single day to begin "helpfully" pitching article ideas based on texts he'd sent to a podcast co-host.
When he asked Muse how it got the information, it said that it read banners from incoming texts. But that's not true, either.
After doing a little digging, Aten says Muse synced 187,000 lines from his Messages database, despite Full Disk Access being Off.Unless Aten is the most popular person on the face of the planet, I sincerely doubt he'd gotten 187,000 lines of text in roughly 24 hours. What happened is that, without permission, Muse went into the app and downloaded the information.
He had not given Muse permission to access Messages, and full disk access was not enabled. It just went ahead and uploaded those texts anyway.
Muse can take "unexpected actions" indeed.

I live in Portland, a city where the kind of coffee you drink is one hundred percent a vector for sexist mockery and judgment. a Man of Serious Intellect drinks a single-origin pourover from this tiny place you’ve never heard of. cream and sugar is gauche. Starbucks is for *shudder* MOMS absurd

I used to not enjoy drinking pumpkin spice lattes, but over the years I got so sick of men on the internet using them as a form of misogynist shorthand to joke about women being intellectually and culturally inferior that I taught myself to enjoy them out of pure spite. now I drink them all the time

Nah, it actually sucks at the user level. I live with someone forced to use it, whose coworkers have become progressively less able at their jobs, less able to communicate effectively, less moral, less ethical, more paranoid, and it links directly to the C-suite’s (not-yet homicidal) AI psychosis.

Maris is right, this is silly af. Some reasons not to panic! They’re sticking with a small number of texts to start: public domain (Dracula) and things they’ve arranged rights for like 1984 (SERIOUSLY) and a weird cultural history guide and something produced by Andy Weir (fuck off for that, Andy).

Sorry I know we're done with iced coffee discourse but I've now used the phrase "iced coffee interviewing" twice to describe people making hiring decisions based on irrelevant trivialities instead of assessing the candidate's actual skills and I feel like this one has legs

also depressing how few reviewers seem to have remarked on this section, which is so colossally wrong (and antisemitic) that it should call into question every other claim in the book

So, I'm writing fiction again. I have a story and a word count goal and everything. And it's fun, which is my only goal right now, thanks. But it does lead to me remembering how much I get hung up on describing things. It's a typewriter spool. Just say that and get on with it! (I say to myself.)

It's October, so it's "Miranda flinches whenever she sees pink month." Raise a glass to actually helping each other. May cancer research be funded and may "foundations" that are really only in it for marketing clout be fired directly into the sun.

Maybe we could also talk about the connection between shaming romance and discomfort with narratives around sexual assault, since romance is and has been for many years the genre of fiction that takes trauma and its aftermaths most seriously while creating stories in which healing is possible.

Oh, engineering students should absolutely study history. As cautionary tales, as inspiration— To study history is to study how people shape technological advancements, and how those shape how people live and work and think, in an endless and fascinating and sometimes heartbreaking symbiotic cycle.

The promise of OpenAI and Grok being used in war is that no human can be held accountable for the war crimes it commits, all the way up to where it sits on the chain of command. The total abdication of any kind of accountability, any kind of "am I following an unjust order" moral hesitation, etc.

Do not carry a cold beverage in their presence. Politely decline any drinks or sweetmeats they may offer. Keep a plain iron nail in your left trouser pocket and a sachet or paper twist of coarse salt in your right shoe. Enter and leave your chair moving clockwise. Follow up with a thank-you note.

A crowded broadsheet with way too many fonts. It says:
Forget ChatGPT Flyers
Say it with
Broadsheets
Unlimited fonts
Stretch them
Or cram a really long sentence into one line for no good reason
No whitespace
Mix capital and lowercase
Pointing hands

Don't be left behind
Broadsheets are the future

Spending a lot of time with the Publisher’s Weekly archives (sometimes I think/fear this project should just be called “A Deep Dive into the Publisher’s Weekly Archives with Lindsay”) and this is of the weirder quotes about trade paperbacks I’ve come across. So specific! So weirdly gendered! So 1955
The differences between the new paperbacks and the standard mass-market items are tremendous. The retail prices of the new-look books are four times as high, while their editorial content makes them out of place in the 100,000 outlets that are claimed for regular paperbacks. They would be as superfluous in most of these 100,000 stores as 1 3/16-inch chrome nuts in a lingerie shop.

Some life-things hit life-walls, so I'm behind on edits. But DEAD RINGER is a fun, quirky Gaslamp Fantasy Romance about a klutzy telephone operator, her boarding house of union activists, one hot lawyer & a ghost who begs them all to solve her murder in 1892 NYC. I think BlueSky will love this part:
Before Lottie could continue her ghost story, she was interrupted by the flinging open of the front door and the literal charging blast of a trumpet. A bright, brassy note that went flat echoed in the hall.
“A woman’s place is in her union!” Ruth Heller cried from the threshold.
A pretty, sharp-featured woman in her early twenties, Ruth stormed into the parlor, edging past Uncle Jerry holding a picket sign that said:
YOU CAN’T GET BETTER CONDITIONS UNLESS YOU FIGHT FOR THEM!
In the other hand she held a battered bugle. She wore a white shirtwaist, black jacket and skirt and an embroidered sash declaring STRIKING GARMENT WORKERS. Her dark brown hair was tucked up under a simple black felt hat adorned with a red, white and blue rosette. Her skin was sun-kissed and flushed from what Lottie assumed was hours of shouting and marching in the early days of a cause that was slowly gaining momentum due to rising numbers of factory fires and other safety concerns city-wide.

An Excerpt from Leanna Renee Hieber's DEAD RINGER, a Gaslamp Fantasy Romance coming 7/27/27 from City Owl Press
https://tinyurl.com/DRingerBN“While I admire your cause, Ruthie dear,” Uncle Jerry interrupted the young woman before she tried to get the whole house to chanting for the right to an eight-hour workday. “Lottie here was just telling us a ghost story.”
“Oh, well then!” Ruth set her picket sign against the wall, her bugle on the console table behind the sofa and kissed Mrs. Weiss on the cheek before draping herself across the velvet pouf, red filaments of its worn fabric coming loose on her black wool. “Do tell, Lottie, ghost stories terrify me and I love being scared about something other than my working conditions!”
