Also Iran as a state is still evil. They already killed thousands of their own citizens for protesting. They really shouldn't be trusted to not use a nuke because they would be harmed. Not that any of this justifies any of what the US is doing, but that's the reasoning for caring.

But unlike NATO, other nations are not obligated to nuke Iran if they nuke a neighbor, so their best defense is either to not proliferate nuclear weapons in tandem, or for everyone to have them. The best case is for none of them to have nukes. Iran pursuing a nuclear weapon breaks that status quo.

The argument goes that the local powers that oppose Iran do not have a nuclear weapon either. Saudi Arabia, Iraq, the UAE, and Oman don't get nukes, so it shifts the balance of power to let Iran have them. (Israel isn't supposed to have nukes but it's an open secret that they lowkey do)
