pink in the night (2019)
lyric comic to pink in the night, by mitski. page 1 text: and i know i've kissed you before, but i didn't do it right. scene 1: a little boy and girl are sitting in the rain. the boy wipes away tears, having tripped and scratched a knee. the girl leans forward to kiss the small wound. scene 2: the two friends are in elementary school, holding hands. the boy looks at a picture depicting a mom, dad, and child.page 2 text: can i try again, try again, try again. scene 1: high school. they lie on the floor during a study session, but they only have eyes for each other. scene 2: college. the same couple, only now they are two girls, kissing in bed. scene 3: the girls are getting married, exchanging a sweet kiss in a field of flowers. sunset colors cast warm light onto their wedding dresses.page 3 text: try again, and again, and again. scene 1: the girls are moving in together. one dozes off against an unpacked moving box as the other kisses her head. scene 2: disneyland. both wear minnie mouse ears as they take a selfie, laughing at the kiss mark one has left on her wife's cheek. scene 3: the childhood friends have grown older. one woman hides a bouquet behind her back as they kiss over breakfast.page 4 text: and again, and again, and again? scene 1: the women wake up in bed together, hints of grey in their hair. one kisses the other's bare shoulder. scene 2: a winter walk. they kiss as their dog plays in the snow. scene 3: the shore of a beach. the wives have greying hair and fine wrinkles, but they're still just as in love. they hold each other close, laughing, full of affection.

one of the funny things about trans is a surprising number of them had mind-body dualism phases in middle school. for reasons that are in retrospect very sad. but its still funny

People get demoralized when transitioning when they discover that beyond the initial identification of "the problem," transitioning itself will not make you happy. What it provides is the POSSIBILITY for happiness by allowing you to more easily participate in romance, community and self-improvement

Cis people do not understand how much trans people's rights have regressed in just 5 years. 5 years ago, there were none of these restrictions. 19 states banned legal recognition 21 states have bathroom bans 8 states ban gender marker changes on DLs 25 ban gender affirming care for trans youth

Astrophotographer Adam (AJ) Smadi caught this image a few hours ago from Washington state. A thin crescent Moon, sunlight illuminating the rugged lunar surface. And 2,400 times farther away—and on the other side of the Sun—mighty Jupiter, and its moons Io (left) and Ganymede (right).
A crescent Moon seen during the day, arcing from upper left to lower right of the frame. At lower centre is the full disk of Jupiter; the small dots to its upper left and lower right and Io and Ganymede, respectively.

Both the Economist and others suggest this study demonstrates that AI can help students. So I contacted the lead researcher to figure out how many. Answer: Out of ~26,000 kids, a total of 20. And five months after starting to use AI, only four continued to spend 65 minutes on homework. Four.
Graph of student exam scores correlated to homework completion time for to groups, students using AI and those that did not. There is a slight spike for studens using AI who also maintained extensive homework completion time. As described in post, the number of students falling into this bucket was 20 out of 26,000.

when we mourn le guin, we mourn one of our greatest writers & thinkers. but we also mourn one of our all-time greatest haters
All you do is take all the sex out, and use little short words, and little dumb ideas, and don't be too scary, and be sure there's a happy ending. Right? Nothing to it. Write down. Right on.

If you do all that, you might even write Jonathan Livingston Seagull and make twenty billion dollars and have every adult in America reading your book.

But you won't have every kid in America reading your book. They will look at it, and they will see straight through it, with their clear, cold, beady little eyes, and they will put it down, and they will go away. Kids will devour vast amounts of garbage (and it is good for them) but they are not like adults: they have not yet learned to eat plastic.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

i took a stab at editing ezra klein’s most recent comments about trans people and electoral politics to make a point often lost by the american liberal commentariat
Klein: I think, from your perspective and from my perspective, we probably don’t believe hugely different things. But a huge amount of the country, a majority of the country, believes things about [edit: the jews], about what policy should be toward [edit: the jews], about what language is acceptable to [edit: the jews], that we would see as fundamentally and morally wrong.

And what politically — not in a column or something, but politically — should our relationship with those people be? Do we win them over? Do we compromise with them?

This feels like a very salient question. The Republican Party is going to make sure this is a relentlessly salient question.

Gift link of the Ezra Klein/Ta-Nehisi Coates thing. Honestly, my main takeaway is just that Ezra Klein seems genuinely lost, unable to articulate what his "we" is or even what he sees as the purpose of his voice, and he should probably take a sabbatical until he figures it out.
