France is fairy rules because how is it that a quick park trip always takes us 3 hours of walking before we realize we've been walking for 3 hours, and then our bodies are like "omg I'm exhausted!!" Oh well, happy tired dogs that don't need another walk today, so hurrah.

Truly one of the most beautiful and intense and peaceful places we have ever been together, especially with the dogs too haha.. Free.99 because of Stiffler's Cultural Attaché status and everyone was absolutely lovely to us, including the tour groups and school field trip that showed up. In love.

Today was a hot day, so we took a drive to the tip of Normandy and visited the Château du Bizy. The dogs especially loved the vacherie and marveling at the quiet gardens.

Today's park visit was on the grounds of the Château de Chamarande, which features loads of modern art. While I enjoyed the sculptures we discovered (with more we have to go back for!), my absolute favorite was the subtly whimsical way-too-big-ladder blending in with the real construction going on.

It's getting colder and colder here and we don't have any big blankets, so we visited a thrift shop and got this giant Moroccan blanket for €3! The pets stole it immediately of course.

As I mentioned before, the French have been so kind and welcoming to us, but I have just one gripe: What is with merging here??? Now when I see an on-ramp ahead, I mutter, "oh lawd, they comin'..." bc they're 80% guaranteed to either be hyper-aggressive or coming to a dead stop for no reason.

Oh, shoot, today is the 16th anniversary of @kdotink.bsky.social and I being legally married on a state-level before it was federally recognized! It was a magical day and the photos that remain of it are of us walking into the Atlantic ocean, facing Northeast, whispering that it was our future. 💕

I can't overstate how kind the French people have been to us, so far. As an example, our pets need to be EU registered and we struggled to get a vet appointment on short notice this week in (what we thought was) Legba's 7-day timeline, being the first to arrive. Then Google screwed us.

We stopped back at the park around le Château du Rambouillet for a picnic before Legba's vet appointment today. The dogs seemed concerned by all of the statue-people dying, but our spirits were lifted by the girl ready to absolutely waste someone with flowers. ✨💐

Papa had his first French vet appointment to register with ICAD (a mandatory thing we have to do for all the pets). Again, EVERYONE IS SO NICE HERE. The vet didn't even let us pay today because we have another appointment on Friday for the other 3 pets.. What!!

I just found out that these crazy-looking plant balls we keep seeing in the trees are mistletoe, and to say that, as an American who just assumed the Christmas decor was in ball-form just because it was cute/traditional, my mind was a little blown. 🤯

Took the dogs just down the street on their walk to some free chateau grounds, and afterward we stopped at a boulangerie to get a €4.50 toasted ham and cheese sandwich (so big!! It was on half a baguette! We shared it with each other + the dogs too) and a €1.90 honey cake.

Learning French as a child has served me well for basic words and emulating the natural accent, but it also means WAY too many people assume I'm fluent and basic interactions go from 0 to 100 in fluency. Even I have to bust out my American accented "oh, I'm new here," it's like a jumpscare.

I did NOT find a fan, but this was the path from there to the car. Fever dreams prepared me for this, so it's easy! First you go though the mall/rail station(???), then down the road, then to the subway, turn into another much emptier mall, then a million slant-escalators, and you're there! 😵‍💫✨

Tried to go to IKEA and got lost and guess what's right beside it??? Versailles. Haha, we very briefly let the dogs pee out, saw some of the forest and the parrots, and have a better plan to come back on Not A Saturday. But the dogs had a blast!! Also we should REDO what the French did here. 👀🪓
