I got curious and checked “Last of the Mohicans,” and while it’s true that the prose is starchy, this opening paragraph is a banger and you should not deny yourself the pleasure of the effort.

T was a feature peculiar to the colonial wars of North America, that the toils and dangers of the wilderness were to be encountered, before the adverse hosts could meet. A wide, and, apparently, an impervious boundary of forests, severed the possessions of the hostile provinces of France and England. If your kid has decided they want to read 'The Hobbit', let them read it. I personally could never get into Tolkien's stuff but I know a good number of folk who are fans and 'The Hobbit' was their springboard in childhood. There's no harm whatsoever in letting them give it a go.
