I can very much imagine a future where we learn enough more about some of this AI superintelligence by January that a newly elected, backlash-fueled Democratic House majority is compelled to play niceish with Trump to bring him to the table of stopping this.

At some point, the public is going to need to become wise to the Faustian bargain AI is offering them, because right now a very powerful lobby is already being formed to argue, legally and practically, that the difference between reality and fiction is not important.

Shota Imanaga's 26 whiffs tonight vs. the Phillies are the most by a pitcher in MLB this season. Imanaga's 26 whiffs also tie Yu Darvish (Aug. 23, 2020) for the most whiffs by a Cubs pitcher in the pitch tracking era (since 2008).

I'm expecting a wheelbarrow-full of pardons for insider trading on January 19, 2029. Note that the prospect of those pardons helps to keep subordinates in line. Corrupt-cop style, make sure that lots of people get a little taste, then make clear that the pardon depends on continued loyalty.

I don't think people fully appreciate how apocalyptic things are for US science. I haven't had any new funding since 2024, but I'm still ok since typical grants are for three years. This means next year I will be completely out of funding and will have to fire everyone in the lab. It's not great.

For most of my journalism career, pardons were considered criminal justice or human interest stories. Now, thanks to Trump's transactional approach, they're part of the lobbying & influence beat. A look behind the scenes of the @nytimes.com's clemency coverage:

This pervasive, pernicious framing concedes that Republicans have no agency in any of their evil and are simply doing what they do. I continue to think that fallacy is more damaging than that the exterminators (btw, interesting choice!) are overmatched.
