With the Cubs’ season officially over now that Jed Hoyer held his annual year-end presser, just wanted to say I appreciate all the Cubs fans who followed along and read my work this season. More to come in the offseason!

Jed Hoyer on how he will approach spending on relief market: “I did a poor job in the bullpen this year — full stop. … So I take responsibility for that and something that we'll look to improve on this offseason because it didn't work out as well as it did in ‘25 this last year.”

Jed Hoyer on the Cubs’ season: “Ultimately, as we sit here today, it feels like we let something slip away and I think that's probably the hardest thing. These fans deserve home playoff games. We let home field slip away by playing poorly in September, especially the last week.”

There will be plenty of time to dissect the Cubs’ failures and path forward in ensuing days, weeks, months but this SD series felt like a reminder that if you don’t secure a bye or home-field advantage in WC, you expose yourself/the team more to the randomness that can happen in a 2-3 game series.

The best offense in baseball managed just 1 run while producing the lowest slugging percentage (.145) in a multi-game postseason series in MLB history. Cubs’ end was swift and painful. “Never get easier if it doesn’t end in a celebration in the World Series.” www.chicagotribune.com/2026/10/01/m...

Chicago Cubs quickly KO’d from playoffs after bats quiet again in 4-1 loss to San Diego Padres
The Chicago Cubs were eliminated from an NL wild-card series against the San Diego Padres, falling 4-1 late Wednesday. The Cubs had only one extra-base hit in the two-game sweep.

Kevin Gausman said he obviously wishes he'd pitched better in Game 2, especially by not letting the Padres get momentum like they did early. "I really wish I could have been 100% and gone out there with a little bit more. But I had what I had and tried to give it everything I had. ... It's tough."

Craig Counsell after the Padres swept the Cubs: "When you're in this position, you're going to be disappointed. You're going to feel unfulfilled. That's just dominating everything you feel right now. Maybe as you reflect, I think I can get to some better places. Right now that's all I feel."

Cubs tallied just 7 hits in Wild Card series by four players: Nico Hoerner 4, Seiya Suzuki 2, Tyrone Taylor 1, Carson Kelly 1. Pete Crow-Armstrong & Alex Bregman went 0-for-15 with 8 Ks and 1 BB. Cubs didn't have XBH in the series until Hoerner's 1-out 2B in 9th. A recipe for postseason disaster.

A disappointing, underwhelming ending for the Cubs. Their season is over, getting swept in the Wild Card by the Padres with tonight's 4-1 loss in Game 2.

Cubs offense will have some regrets if they don't pull out this game with wasted scoring opportunities. A Kelly HBP loads the bases but Swanson flies out on the first pitch from Padres' Rodriguez, a 99.3 mph fastball up and in. Cubs are 1-for-6 with RISP and have left 5 on base through 4 innings.

The Cubs offense finally breaks through. Nico Hoerner's single up the middle makes it 2-1 Padres in the 4th for the Cubs' first run of the series. That ends Pivetta's night as the Cubs have runners on 1B and 2B with 1 one out.

Cubs are already out of ABS challenges for the rest of the game in the 3rd inning. Bad ABS challenges by PCA in the 1st inning and now Carson Kelly behind the plate, challenging a pitch with nobody on base for a would-be 3-2 count.

Cubs squandered a great scoring opportunity against Pivetta in the 3rd. With 2 on and nobody out, Swanson worked a 3-0 count before striking out on a full-count fastball near his ankles. Then Crow-Armstrong popped out and Bregman flies out to end the inning. Padres still up 2-0.

Dansby Swanson pregame: "At this time of year, it can be challenging because you go so in depth with the other team & trying to navigate what they're going to do, what we're going to do. I think the greatest reminder is if we do what we do best then we feel like we're a really good baseball team."

It’ll be interesting to see how aggressively Counsell uses his pitching staff without a dominant backend of the bullpen. The Cubs are only the 5th team since saves became an official stat in 1969 to make playoffs without a 10-save pitcher, joining 2022 Rays, 1987 Tigers, 1982 Angels & 1973 Orioles.
