Macro shot of umbrella liverwort growing in a plant pot among sprouts and twigs. Pictured are multiple female reproductive structures with tall, reddish brown stalks and vivid green, star-like rays at the top, resembling miniature palm trees.

as a hater let me acknowledge something ai is good at: producing irritating discourse at scale this is usually because, like "ai" itself, people are talking about different things like they are one thing so let me disentangle, with statements numbered for easy disagreement

The nor’easter power outages have reached us; other parts of New Jersey have been without power since Friday. And my big portable battery that has powered the fridge through previous outages is…not working. Hmm.

Every year we make the case for keeping leaves, branches, & plant stems in your yard. Bugs need them for shelter! That’s not to say you can’t tidy up: rake leaves into garden beds, around trees, or just in a pile out of the way. All we ask is that you #LeaveTheLeaves! 🍂🐝 xerces.org/blog/leave-t...

Leave the Leaves!
One of the most valuable ways to support pollinators and other invertebrates is to provide them with the shelter they need to survive the winter. Thankfully, all you need to do is do less yard work.

AI is a normal technology entangled with a normal demon. Leaving aside intentional use to make bad things worse, the former is going to produce normal accidents (some of which will be extremely bad) and the latter is going to continue making people lose their minds.

Guitar views.
Close-up of the neck joint of an Ibanez SRH500F fretless bass. The top is golden-stained spruce, the fingerboard is dark striated panga panga, and the neck wood, visible in a curved carve-out, is reddish-orange jatoba with subtle stripes of brown walnut. The strings are Pyramid black tapewounds. The fret lines are thin dark stripes, and a single pearloid offset marker dot is in the 24th-fret space.Extreme close-up of the volume knob on a Yamaha Pacifica 012 electric guitar. Behind the knob are a white pearloid pick guard, a chrome vintage-style bridge, and a white humbucker. The guitar body is metallic red, but it looks close to black in this lighting.Tight close-up of the very end of a Yamaha Pacifica 012 electric guitar headstock. On and around the light maple wood are a black three-tuning-forks-in-a-circle Yamaha logo, the high E string tuning peg and key (and string), and the key for the B string tuner.

There’s some talk going around about disability and long covid that has me feeling some feelings. I’m coming up on 6 years since losing my beloved sister to Covid. She was a lifelong photographer while I came to it late. I wouldn’t be where I am without her.
A person is silhouetted against a golden scene at sunset. The setting sun is reflected in still water below, with trees framing her and a line of trees at the horizon. It’s a very peaceful image

I just found this photo of a remote for a stair-lift chair. I’m genuinely impressed: If someone handed this to me without explanation, I would have no idea what any of the buttons do or what kind of device they control.
Catalog photo of the remote control for a Flow X stair lift. It’s a long rounded off-white rectangle, looking a bit too large for the hand that’s holding it. Near the top is a rounded rectangular button divided into top and bottom halves: the top has a simplified silhouette of a person’s head and torso, with a dashed arrow pointing inward to the middle of the body; the bottom is an uppercase letter P. Below that large button and still above the midline of the remote is a rounded square button with no markings at all. The bottom half of the remote is an empty flat surface.

we've never had much reason to articulate this before a.i., but a reason we enjoy literature, art, music, etc. is that we know it is one human mind trying to express something fundamentally human and otherwise inexpressible to another human mind

Quote with a ship that makes you happy: The Ship of the Imagination.
The Ship of the Imagination from Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey. It’s a thin-edged oblong lozenge with a seamless chrome mirror finish and a spherical module embedded near one end. As pictured, it’s hovering in a vertical orientation just off some seaside cliffs with its lower tip touching the water, and it appears to be about 200 feet tall. As a ship of the imagination, it can change in size and is not restricted by the laws of physics, able to travel freely within and across space and time. It is a vessel of scientific communication and speculation.

Thinking, as always, of the most clever, kind, creative, generous, patient, curious, attentive, geeky, hopeful, resilient, caring, beloved person I have known, killed by long covid two weeks after her birthday six years ago. So this photo contains zero birds, but in my defence, we were sitting outside waiting for birds. But the sun was almost setting and the backlit Snapdragons stole the show!
A backlit snapdragon flower that is partially opened. The background is dark green with a round sun like highlight in the top right corner. It’s actually an out of focus highlight that appears large because it’s a telephoto lens. The pink snapdragon flower is rim lit but has some light bouncing back to light the flower.
For those interested, the lens is a 400mm and required 5 frames focused on slightly different parts of the flower to be stacked together so the entire flower was sharp .

A piece of colourful corporate nonsense looking sticker stating NOW AI POWERED! Talk to me. Ask me to do things! with a happy little speech bubble computer-looking character, with shiny little AI stars and a space looking background in the middle. To be placed on things that look like maybe they could be AI powered, BUT ARE NOT.
