six inches of black thread got me thinking about instructions for unraveling Thanks to @madp03t.bsky.social and #AmpersandAfterDark #prompt #prompt #poetry #blueskypoetry #writesky #poetrycommunity #writingcommunity #fictionwriters #poets #creativewriting
instructions for unraveling

except where it catches the light,
black thread is nearly invisible in the dark.

six inches have come loose.

i measured them where they lay against my hand.

the rest is still there.

somewhere at another end
you are holding.

the smile problem

my mother always told me
not to show my teeth
in photographs

you see,
a smile and a threat
are simply
the difference between
having teeth and
using them

sometimes
i still catch myself
smiling into the dark
like a feral animal
searching for meat
between the teeth

winter burn

this is how an evergreen dies of thirst.
the water is there.
under six inches of frozen ground
the roots,
surrounded by it.
all winter
the needles keep giving
what the roots
cannot replace.
first
they turn gold.
we call them beautiful.
then brown.
by spring
everyone can see
the brown.
underground
nothing
was ever missing.

rot

still
i lie awake
to look at your
side of the bed
the light knows
you are not there
but i don't
stop seeing you
the face
comes first
a pale pause
above the pillow
your breath
against my mouth
the shape of a body
occupying the dark
i know you are not here
still
i wait
see if you'll move

dead letter

i wash the dishes
in the dark

because i know
where everything is.

the tap.
the soap.
the chipped glass
you always said
to throw away.

remember when
you said
nothing mattered
and i said nothing.

it does.

the glass slips.
i hear it break
somewhere in the sink.

for a while
i leave my hands
where they are.

the tap keeps running.

i am quiet.

you are far away.

or whatever
you are.

eventually
i put my hand
back in the water.

stray

i’m having that nightmare again
the one about the cars--the accident

until i wake
filled with the results of the late night
myself

the only salvation
hot
strong
coffee

later
i walk in the sun
without direction

the purposelessness feels sneaky
like a cold draft

let my mind wander
farther than my feet can carry

imagine myself
getting run down
by a passing car

i stop
when i am far enough away from home
to text
even though i've had my phone
in my hand the whole way

open our messages
type something
delete it

against the traffic i call
listen until
the ringing stops

when it’s my turn
i can’t remember
what to say

half-heartedly watch a movie after the sun goes down but turn it off part way realizing i’ll either cry soon or lose interest and i don’t have the spirit for either instead i try to write and nothing comes out nothing worthwhile only something about that stupid dream i’ve been having since i was old enough to remember i write about how this morning i wondered if my neighbors were dead in their apartment because i could hear their alarm clock going off for over an hour the rational response that they may have just been out didn’t occur to me until later but i select it all with the mouse and hit the delete key create a new document without a name and type

i keep trying to write
about uncertainty
like it's—

i heard you
the first time.

like
comprehension
was the problem.

like i was ever going to remain
open to your
persuasion.

like it's—

say it again
only slower
this time.

as if repetition
might flood in like evidence.

oooh. yes.
go on ahead.

explain it to me
one more time.

like it's uncertainty and not
judgement rendered.

recipe for bread

Begin with two cups of flour.
Make a well and slowly add the water.
Around the outer edge, scatter the salt.
In a smaller bowl, wake the yeast.
Coat your hands with a little oil.
If you prefer a softer loaf, add sugar.

After five minutes, stir the sugar.
If the mixture remains wet, add flour.
Turn it onto the counter with a little oil.
If it refuses to come together, add water.
Give it another ten minutes for the yeast.
Taste what sticks to your finger. Add salt.

If it tastes too sharp, add more salt.
If it has become too stiff, loosen with sugar.
Do not worry if you can no longer smell the yeast.
This can still be corrected with flour.
Keep your hands from sticking with water.
Keep the counter from sticking with oil.

You may now have used rather a lot of oil.
Balance this with another pinch of salt.
If necessary, dissolve more yeast.
There is no harm in another spoonful of sugar.
The mixture should respond to water.
If it does not, add flour.

Do not discard the flour.
Transfer everything to a larger bowl and add oil.
This can still be corrected with water.
There is almost certainly enough salt.
There may now be too much sugar.
This is not necessarily the fault of the yeast.

Begin again with the yeast.
You will need considerably less water.
Do not attempt to remove the sugar.
At this stage, avoid additional flour.
Unless the mixture requires additional salt.
If the mixture requires additional oil—

stop.

Combine the salt with the remaining oil.
Add enough flour to contain the sugar.
Do not add more water. You have lost the yeast.

instead
i write a haiku
about a guy i know
who can never quite find

or maybe
i have that backwards.

I understand this machine.

You could claim that I am
bored by performance.

Fine.

I'm bored by the assumption
that the interesting thing about it
is the performer.

And like all boring,
intellectually curious questions,
we could wax poetical about how
the participant doesn't necessarily
know
what role they're playing

blah de dah dah dah.

That nobody even knows
they are participating.

That refusal may circle us in.

Observation changes everything.

Choices have consequences
that aren't always apparent

Yes. Fine.

All of that gobbledygook.

Main stage syndrome.
Everybody posing

Everybody looking there.
Nobody looking here.

As if looking

As if leaving

To make a jacket,
you need fabric and an idea.
A sewing machine helps,
but thread and needle will do.

You outgrow the memories—
movie stubs,
tobacco flaking the seams.
Shed it.
Stitch it back together.
Give it away
to someone who needs it more.

A jacket has arms,
a front and a back.
It’s worn for weather,
or zipped up to hide.
Armor. Inheritance.
Absence you can wear.

In my memory,
I’m still wearing the jacket you hated.
Left it on a southbound train—
the day we jumped the ticket gates
at Euston Station.
That stupid patch pocket
always leaking change,
always reaching
for your fingers.

Radio Silence

I clutch at what the borders of the paper contain. The writing on the reverse side presses through like a hidden meaning. I don't turn it over. I don't read the words. I already know what they say.

Yesterday hasn't stayed put. It pours into each day the way sunlight finds every crack in a room.

We don't have a name for this. The habit of never letting go of a string. The fear that if we finally loosen our grip, we'll discover nothing was ever tied to the other end—that our imagination was the tether all along.

And yet I keep holding on.

Because without the weight of faith and love and desperation, I think I would float clean away.

A station bleeding through the dark.

The Listener #AmpersandAfterDark #prompt "a lonely voice in a crowded room" @madp03t.bsky.social
The Listener

At ninety-two, Tacey Swash lived behind a tackle shop near the tourist beach on the Duwamish. She was said to have the softest, most soothing, and most powerful voice ever to fall upon the ears of the men of earth and the depths of the Pacific Ocean.

Tacey spoke so quietly that people leaned closer, and that was the problem.
When they got too close, they could hear their own thoughts loud as the storm alarm bells.

Old sailors claimed she carried every conversation she'd ever heard folded into the lining of her coat. Others swore a colony of ghosts followed her from room to room, whispering corrections. It was said that when she swam, black fish rose from the depths and fed on every word people wished they could take back.

The town depended upon Tacey the way sailors depend upon lighthouses.
From a distance.

She spent most evenings alone on the beach.
The black fish gathered offshore.
The waves landed like ghost whispers.

And somewhere in town, another crowded room was slowly inventing a story.

A shoutout to @johnchmura.bsky.social, who accepted my #BadErections challenge after misreading a line in one of my poems and who consistently leaves some of the most thoughtful comments in the #PoemsAbout community. Thank you, John! I've attached my own bad erection below. Feel free to join in.
bad erections

every city
is full of them

people

mistaking
being seen

for being
known

stories

arriving

standing

Collapse

Germany left me believing
that divisions could end.

Holding a piece of that wall
in my own two hands

taught me everything
I needed to know about change.

About the quiet pressure
of collapse.

I spent the next decades
discovering the same thing
about people.

At least the first wall
I watched fall

wasn't mine.

How to Spend One Minute Properly

Hop on one foot and pat your head
just nod instead
then touch the floor
and close the door

Say Bloody Mary to the sink
and do not blink
then face the drain
then speak your name

Find a clover and pick it up
for your good luck
trip on a crack
then pay it back

For this week's #PoemsAbout #EarnTheRight, I'm thinking about how proximity is not witness. @alanparrywriter.co.uk @thebrokenspine.co.uk #poetry #poem #writing #PoetryCommunity #BlueSkyPoets
proximity
like bad directions and barking dogs is not witness
to be
is to be loved
a wish
proximity another
neither enough
when the world stands beside us
and denies who we are

lost fingerprints along damp glass
dusklight looms fast
storms run static
dogs run frantic

palms pressed against cool sheets twisted
night mouths salted
shallow breathing
box fan teasing

the open window swallows dark
our closed eyes spark

mouths sucking ice
wild laughs flash white

never sent

i once wrote
an entire chapter
about you
playing the piano

birdsong
touching me from
the other side of the glass
across miles

something trying
to return

i sit very still
and watch the sun patch
move across the room

memory
could resolve me
in the past

softly trapped alone
the silence
holds me again

i have the honor to report

nothing survived

just your fingerprints
disappearing
along damp glass

your name
a collection of sounds
signifying nothing

memories
or casualties
filed the same way

according to official records

the body
failed to continue

still
my signal flares
one by one

bearing witness is survival #PoemsAbout #BearingWitness @alanparrywriter.co.uk @thebrokenspine.co.uk #poetry #poem #writing #PoetryCommunity #BlueSkyPoets
a house without witness
like wading through whispers

time so thick
it ticks me over

and pours me out
across the rooms

into the windowglass
holding evening

i am wild
without witness

the body searching
for proof

what we bear
we keep alive
only long enough
to tell

if i placed
my impulse
with your intent
sharp as a thrown knife
what kind of damage
would come

some feral geometry
of impact
and hunger

you moving too fast
for consequence
me already burning
through restraint

the body loves
what might destroy it

this isn't physics
though everything
still accelerates
toward impact

she said
don't be hesitant

as i stood in the drive
throwing rocks

like the road
were the ocean

skip.
skip.
skip.

and i don't know
what she means

all cock-eyed
and rainbow socks

like the road

leads to the ocean

which it doesn't

all roads lead somewhere

except this one

that just does a loop

and then you're back again
where you started

standing in the street
throwing rocks

smiling into the dark
like feral animals

searching for meat
between their teeth

the ovenbird waits in the dead of night
calling for something nameless to arrive

the earth goes on spinning beneath the stars
their patterns scattered across the night sky

like some wild animal i sit and wait
beside the window grey and lifeless now

a dark sea rocking softly on the glass
the wind unsteady in the brittle panes

we turn alone together through the night
until the luminous grey morning comes

and i finally see you standing there
waiting for the morning light to reach me

offspring

i sit and watch
my son
play with the dog

the first full day
of summer

cool and bright
and full of promise

weeks ahead
lacking nothing

we think we see
a snake in the grass

but it is only
our imaginations

i'm not scared
of anything

my son says

as the dog digs
deeper

what are you afraid of?

i don't like
the unknown,

i shout

as the dog gives chase
through the garden

nobody does

after enough loss
even the light changes shape

what remains
is rarely the thing itself

warmth lingering
in ordinary objects

your coffee cup
against my lips

as if a kiss

silence developing structure

rooms remember things differently
than people do

happy mother's day #poetry #poem #writing #PoetryCommunity #BlueSkyPoets #writingcommunity
Mother’s Day and I wait all day
to use the washing machine.
I’m the one who offered.
The sink fills itself again.

To use the washing machine
after everyone else is done.
The sink fills itself again.
I carry snacks upstairs anyway.

After everyone else is done
the laundry still warm in baskets.
I carry snacks upstairs anyway.
Everyone else had all week.

The laundry still warm in baskets.
A bag of chips in their hands.
Everyone’s been busy all week.
Well, you’re the one who offered.

Sixty-Four Failed Attempts to Guess a Wi-Fi Password

i don't remember the name
of the street
where your mother lived

when we first met

and spent our time

staring at one another
across tables

in crowded
lonely
rooms

nothing

not the zip code

not even
your favorite color

the way you hold
your left eye

slightly awake
in your sleep

our lives blinking
softly

in the dark

as if patience

might erase

how little of you
i ever held

as if love meant

proximity
as access
