In Bailieborough Courthouse on Saturday evening. At the opening of Jim McPartlin's stunning exhibition, 'Celebrating the Landscape'. I read my poem 'Old Heritage' (written for Heritage Week) on the theme - Heritage at Risk. Thank you to Petra van Zanten for this wonderful video ❤️

Hi @dragonslayerma.bsky.social Fidel, here is my second response to your #PromptCombo #Pray:
Absence

Plenty of voices in my head
but no one is god.

I pray but no one
makes themself known.

If there is someone
in the absence

it is the absent god.
How can they be absent

when they were never there?
I pray to nothing when grief

hits home. When an ache
for the person I knew persists.

I Was Never Taught To Pray

I grew up believing
in smaller certainties.

May the milkman always be on time,
and the sun be on the garden table
by our lunch,
Dad be home at twenty‑to,
ready for dinner at eight.

That was enough.

I was never taught to pray.

That was enough,
until the vending‑machine walk
past the hospital chapel.
The people inside
clasping faith in their hands.

That was enough,
until your room,
where the silence rang out
louder than the machines,

and the hours
kneeling there

with empty hands.

Thanks to @dragonslayerma.bsky.social for this week's #PromptCombo #Pray Here’s my contribution
The Prayer of Breathing Before words there was this: the first tide entering the body,
the first assent
we never knew we gave. And after words, after all our names have loosened their hold, there will be this again, one breath leaving quietly,
as if returning
what was only ever lent. Between the two we live: coming, going, held for a while in the mercy
of exchange.
Breath asks nothing of us. It keeps faith through sleep, through griet,
through familiar days. It enters without applause, leaves without complaint, comes back as if forgiveness were the body's
oldest habit. And perhaps this
is prayer

The Ritual by Danielle Grace

Face pressed to the floor I pray
For absolution night and day
Begging for a sense of peace
That world suffering might cease

Upon my knees I ask for rest
And that the least of us be blessed
Though now I stand on shaky faith
Evil shall be consigned to waste

I see proliferations of such greed
While I'm reduced to mustard seeds
And yet I still continue on
With hope that someone listens yon.

"Prayer". #poem #poetry #skypoets #blueskypoets #poetsofbluesky #poetrycommunity #writingcommunity #prayer #promptcombo @dragonslayerma.bsky.social
From each solemn place of worship
Prayers are offered every day:
People wanting to confess;
People with a suit to press;
People wanting to be blessed;
People asking for success.
All of them receive an answer:
     “Prayer returned:
     “no such address.”

Pray

for hope
for redemption
to save
your ravaged soul

your gods
are not mine
your gods
are corrupt

their mortal intermediaries
in it for themselves
lives of luxury
bigotry and control

scared
of who we might

Idle

1 .The Dead Mass
Sliding down the gym window,
they run nowhere.
The television murmurs,
incense smoke curls into air,
another heir disappears into tradition.
And on another screen,
many others disappear into nothing.
They watch as they run.
Sweat instead of tears.
(We pray instead of mourning.)
When will the ritual end?

2. The Dead Myths
We don’t invent myths anymore.
Nor words.
We don’t need to try too hard.
Those who shaped the lesson
are already fine like this.
The stories fade,
but we don’t chase them.
(We pray to tomorrow’s newspapers.)
When will the echo end?

3. The Dead Trophy
We have nailed the ideal to the wall,
like a trophy.
Every now and then we glance at it.
A relic, admired but untouched.
A memory, but not a belief.
(We pray to call it love.)
When will the silence end?

4. The Burning
We have learned the lesson.
And now we wait.
There will be no grades,
no evaluation.
Only the weight of what we didn’t think,
what we didn’t say,
what we didn’t do.
And it will be us with our idle prayers
who send ourselves to hell.
( I still pray as it burns on my skin.)

Thanks @dragonslayerma.bsky.social for this weeks #PromptCombo #prayer written whilst hiking and pausing at a convent.
In the new cities
every prayer arrives
with a stranger’s address.

Some requests are small.
A broken window.
A hungry child.

Others wake to foreign coordinates
and roads crossing mined fields.

At first people prayed less.
Then in the bluest hour before dawn
the compassionate grew luminous
murmuring from one apartment window to the next.Entrance to convent cappucciniConvent cappuccini

Hi Fidel and the #poetry crew @dragonslayerma.bsky.social thanks for your inspiring #poem and #PromptCombo #pray this week. An off the cuff with my cuppa from me today. Always needs more work! Enjoy your hosting week. I’ll enjoy seeing the results.
A short 3 stanza poem by Debbie Ross entitled Learning to Pray Again

text as follows
I learnt to pray
into the darkness
when I was young,
those Catholic lines
repeated
as protection.
I stopped praying when I lost faith,
answers not forthcoming, silence the reply.
I've learnt to pray into the light now I'm older, faith
in the community of doing.

Hi @dragonslayerma.bsky.social Fidel. Hope you have a great week. Here iis my response to your great #promptcombo #Pray:
God (s) Prayer(s)

God or the gods,
details are difficult
prays to personkind

that their worship places
will not be destroyed
by wars often pursued
in their name.

that their priests, clergymen,
laity will not be imprisoned
and tortured in the names
of other gods equally praying.

that women and children
will not be refused learning
and getting on in life
by a misinterpretation

of sacred texts. That their
sacred texts will not be burned
as blasphemy and false gods
in the minds of their faithful

who murder others for doing so.
That their prayers will not fall
on deaf ears, or those who
refuse to listen, citing scripture.

@dragonslayerma.bsky.social #PromptCombo #Pray and I now use this feature on a Monday as a barometer of my ability to work for the week :D VERY off-piste response incoming. West Ham United are no longer in the Premier League. This poem is for my mate who still can’t believe it. It wasn’t you.
Back Down by S. Reeson

I know that you will
have tried everything
lucky socks not washing
any drop of repetition
that might help
but in the end
even changing one letter
however hard you pray
sometimes you are not enough
play was where the intervention
was always sorely needed
and it came too late
if you’d have scored like that
straight out of the gate
you’d still be in the game
Instead you’re going down.
