Despite the ornate setting of Westminster, this press conference has the ineffable air of the sad-faced losers’ gathering in the cafe at the end of each episode of The Apprentice. We need and deserve better legislation than this Bill would have been. I’m glad it failed

A sign of recovery of Britain’s Conservative Party will be when they stop reflexively attacking lawyers, judges and the idea of legality generally. They’d do better to rediscover their own strong legal tradition embodied by people like Dominic Grieve and Lord Garnier.

To the extent that Trump / Vance have a strategic vision for the US-UK relationship, it is not to strengthen the UK. The vision is to weaken Europe by severing UK from the continent. Trump-Vance true "special relationship" is with Russia. Russia desperately fears UK-EU unity 2/x

If the UK had still been part of the EU then... A) The EU tariff would have been 16%-17% not 20% based on Trump's formula B) The UK would also have been subject to that 16%-17% tariff but crucially our trade would have remained MUCH higher (Brexit has hurt us much more than the tariff difference!)

Ukraine is explicitly the first, necessary step toward any further expansion. This is the second leg they are missing (in their mind) to start running, rather than limping. What is the end point? For some, it is recreation of the USSR (I'm looking at you, Balts). For others, of the Russian Empire

Great thread. I think what drives Russian imperialism is also collective paranoia: whoever your neighbours are, they're out to get you, so you'd better get them first. In the 90s, a Russian general assured me that Russia had only ever fought defensive wars, & that was how its territory had grown.

An awful lot of things that are nothing to do with Brexit are all about Brexit. For instance, if we still had the tax take from the 4% of GDP that Brexit stole from us, Labour wouldn't have to wield the chainsaw of Austerity 2.0. It's those sorts of dots they are remiss in not joining together.

Undo Brexit. That's the biggest juiciest lowest-hanging fruit. Regaining up to 4% of GDP would be massive. Of course it would take some *tricky* negotiations with the EU. Nothing taken for granted! But one thing is guaranteed: if we don't start, we won't finish, and if we don't ask, we won't get.

Trump put out a statement saying the Ukrainians were encircled in Kursk and called on his pal Putin not to massacre them. There is nowhere in Kursk where the Ukrainians are even in danger of being encircled. This a ploy so he can give Putin what he wants in exchange for “mercy”.
