To refugees: you are welcome here. We stand with you. Your safety matters. People wearing masks, marching through our streets and stoking fear, are unacceptable. It’s more than “thuggery”. It’s racism, walking boldly through our communities. And it's emboldened by political rhetoric.

It's one of the most common questions about asylum. Refugees don't just need safety. They need family, community and the chance to rebuild their lives. International law doesn't require people to seek asylum in the first safe country they reach. History shapes journeys.
This image features bold white text on a black background: "Why don't refugees stay in the first safe country?" There's a textured question mark. Below, a hand is pointing upward against a background of clouds.Black background with two sections labeled "False" and "True." Under "False," a red X and the text: "Refugees must claim asylum in the first safe country they reach." Under "True," a green checkmark and text: "There is no rule in international law that says this. In fact, there are many reasons why the first safe country isn't suitable."A text graphic with a black background. It reads: "AND HERE'S THE HISTORY LESSON. For centuries, Britain was connected to countries across Africa, Asia and the Middle East/West Asia through empire. These connections shaped languages, migration patterns and family networks that still exist today. The image features a poster with the text: "People seeking safety aren't choosing countries at random. They're often following family, community and historical connections that were built over generations." Below the text is a black and white photograph of the ship "Empire Windrush" with many people on deck. A green arrow symbol is at the bottom right corner.

I liked Nolan's 'Odyssey'. Although Odysseus is a very postmodern American hero, the film does good justice to the nonlinearity of storytelling &addresses the ethics of hospitality/'ξενία'.Stories live through retelling&recontextualisation and how we treat guests/"strangers" is tied to who we are.

Just under 5 years ago, The Guardian censored these words of non-binary academic Judith Butler arguing that transphobia is fascism. Butler has quite obviously been proved right. A good day to share this widely.
It is very appalling and sometimes quite frightening to see how trans-exclusionary feminists have allied with rightwing attacks on gender. The anti-gender ideology movement is not opposing a specific account of gender but seeking to eradicate "gender" as a concept or discourse, a field of study, an approach to social power. Sometimes they claim that "sex" alone has scientific standing, but other times they appeal to divine mandates for masculine domination and difference. They don't seem to mind contradicting themselves.
The Terfs (trans exclusionary radical feminists) and the so-called gender critical writers have also rejected the important work in feminist philosophy of science showing how culture and nature interact (such as Karen Barad, Donna Haraway, EM Hammonds or Anne Fausto-Sterling) in favor of a regressive and spurious form of biological essentialism. So they will not be part of the coalition that seeks to fight the anti-gender movement.
The anti-gender ideology is one of the dominant strains of fascism in our times. So the Terfs will not be part of the contemporary struggle against fascism, one that requires a coalition guided by struggles against racism, nationalism, xenophobia and carceral violence, one that is mindful of the high rates of femicide throughout the world, which include high rates of attacks on trans and genderqueer people.
The anti-gender movement circulates a spectre of "gender" as a force of destruction, but they never actually read any works in gender studies. Quick and fearful conclusions take the place of considered judgments. Yes, some work on gender is difficult and not everyone can read it, so we have to do better in reaching a broader public. As important as it is, however, to make complex concepts available to a popular audience, it is equally important to encourage intellectual inquiry as part of public life.
Unfortunately, we are living in anti-intellectual times, and neo-fascism is becoming more normalized.

Violent racism is becoming all too familiar. We’ve written to the Prime Minister expressing our deep concern, calling for an urgent meeting with anti-racist and faith groups to develop a serious anti-racist strategy, one that shows genuine leadership in response to this ugly chapter.
A letter to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, with white font over a navy background, that reads:

Dear Prime Minister,

I am writing to you to express my deep concern about rising racism in the UK.

Last weekend’s Unite the Kingdom rally, organised by ‘convicted thugs and racists’ - as you have indeed described them - is the latest display of normalised hate. We witnessed calls for the removal of Islam and Muslims from the UK, and for people to stand ‘ready to fight’ for their survival. There was an exploitation of fears around gendered violence, whilst at the same time Muslim women were deliberately and intentionally mocked.

The incredible rise in violent racism and the increasing normalisation of the promotion of that hate is both a domestic and global issue. Just yesterday we saw news of the racist murders at an Islamic Centre in San Diego, USA. This comes alongside a spate of under-reported mosque attacks in the UK.

These incidents come after the recent antisemitic attack in Golders Green on two Jewish men, and a rise in religiously motivated hate crimes overall. Violent racism is becoming an all too familiar occurrence. Regrettably the responses so far have felt incongruent to the reality of what we know to be the root causes. Whilst a policing response is often regarded as a firm reaction of reassurance - there is little evidence to suggest that policing is an adequate solution to the long term causes of racism, nor will it solve the terrible wounds that are inflicted on the ties that underpin our social fabric.

As a Muslim woman, leading one of the country’s most prominent racial justice charities, I am not only a professional witness to this rising hatred. I am a mother, a daughter, a sister, and a friend inside the Muslim community, and I can tell you that there is deep fear and rage, and ultimately a sense of betrayal, that the level of threat felt by the Muslim community appears negligible to mainstream political actors. We note in your video preceding the…
