Overall data for the UK, by institutional spend. Eye-opening!
A treemap in which each rectangle's area is proportional to article processing charge expenditure by that organisation. UCL is the largest at €17,578,248, with the Wellcome Trust close behind at €15,336,686. The next tier comprises the University of Oxford (€10,886,254), the University of Cambridge (€10,013,672) and Imperial College London (€7,643,943). Below these: Manchester (€6,476,187), Edinburgh (€5,142,167), King's College London (€4,797,509), Birmingham (€4,367,730), Cardiff (€3,657,998), Newcastle (€3,151,448), Sheffield (€2,423,077), Bristol (€1,993,773) and Exeter (€1,952,221). The remainder resolves into well over a hundred progressively smaller rectangles, most too small to label - the spend concentrated heavily in a handful of large, research-intensive institutions.

Regimenting migrant storytelling: Affective positionings in the online curated stories of UK-based charity organisations
In this study, we examine the online stories of migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers curated by UK-based charity organisations. Through a mixed-methods approach, we focus on the online emergence of a positive storytelling canon that privileges certain affective positions over others. These positions feed into a problematic sense-making about migration in the UK that celebrates the stories of those migrants who incur positive (affective) changes in their lives, at the expense of potentially marginalizing others. Using a critical storytelling perspective that draws on the frameworks of affective positioning and small stories, we take one representative story as our focus to illustrate the affective participation frameworks made available to migrants. We discuss the linguistic and multimodal configuration of the story online, and the implications of the affective positions created for migrants for wider discourses about migration in the UK. Finally, we show how certain exemplary stories are static and affect-centred and do not seem to capitalise on dialogic and interactive participatory formats, unlike other forms of online storytelling. We argue that they contribute to a positive migrant storytelling canon that is well established in advocacy contexts and may have overtly empowering but covertly disempowering effects.

This week, Rachelle Vessey @rachellevessey.bsky.social will talk about "Gender ideologies in workplace surveys: The case of the Canadian military" Join us on March 13 at 16 EET (check the time zone!): tinyurl.com/talkosso @lulind.bsky.social @ylvabiri.bsky.social
The military has been identified as a gendered space where hypermasculinity seems to be a potential predictor of sexual violence and impropriety (Bonnes, 2024; Duval Lantoine, 2022; Eichler, 2019; Pershing, 2003; Stachowitsch, 2013). In Canada, while the Canadian Armed Forces institutionally espouses gender equality, in practice problems relating to gender-based harm seem “intractable” (Rubenfeld and Lucas, 2025, p. 2). The persistence of these problems could be, in part, the result of discursive practices that reinstantiate a gender-based divide in banal and mundane ways. Using a discursive approach to sexual violence and impropriety (Ehrlich, 2001; Kitzinger & Thomas, 1995), this paper identifies gender ideologies, i.e., normalized beliefs and values about gender that are shared throughout Canadian servicemembers’ language use. These gender ideologies tend to underpin arguments about sexual violence and impropriety in the Canadian military. Using a 1.6-million-word corpus of short answer responses to military surveys, corpus-assisted discourse studies (CADS) is used to examine gendered representations, comparing and contrasting these across subsets of data produced by male and female servicemembers. Findings reveal both explicit representations via overuse of gendered labels and more subtle mechanisms of representations via metaphor and personal pronouns. The paper concludes by highlighting the role of gendered ideologies in attempts to discredit accounts of sexual violence and impropriety.

Screenshot of a concordance of "book" and "books" from a corpus of 19th century novels on CLiC. the lines are ranked by the number of words that end in ing, highlighting lines with multiple gerund forms, for instance: "looking at her instead of the book.
