To refugees: you are welcome here. We stand with you. Your safety matters. People wearing masks, marching through our streets and stoking fear, are unacceptable. It’s more than “thuggery”. It’s racism, walking boldly through our communities. And it's emboldened by political rhetoric.
The image features a black and white background with people holding signs. Overlaid text reads, "DON'T MAKE RACISM MORE WELCOME THAN REFUGEES."

Instead of publicly condemning this terrifying behaviour, politicians keep fanning the flames of hatred by using dehumanising language about people seeking safety, and creating laws that target refugee rights. It's time the government stood up for welcome and safety, and united communities.

It's one of the most common questions about asylum. Refugees don't just need safety. They need family, community and the chance to rebuild their lives. International law doesn't require people to seek asylum in the first safe country they reach. History shapes journeys.
This image features bold white text on a black background: "Why don't refugees stay in the first safe country?" There's a textured question mark. Below, a hand is pointing upward against a background of clouds.Black background with two sections labeled "False" and "True." Under "False," a red X and the text: "Refugees must claim asylum in the first safe country they reach." Under "True," a green checkmark and text: "There is no rule in international law that says this. In fact, there are many reasons why the first safe country isn't suitable."A text graphic with a black background. It reads: "AND HERE'S THE HISTORY LESSON. For centuries, Britain was connected to countries across Africa, Asia and the Middle East/West Asia through empire. These connections shaped languages, migration patterns and family networks that still exist today. The image features a poster with the text: "People seeking safety aren't choosing countries at random. They're often following family, community and historical connections that were built over generations." Below the text is a black and white photograph of the ship "Empire Windrush" with many people on deck. A green arrow symbol is at the bottom right corner.

I liked Nolan's 'Odyssey'. Although Odysseus is a very postmodern American hero, the film does good justice to the nonlinearity of storytelling &addresses the ethics of hospitality/'ξενία'.Stories live through retelling&recontextualisation and how we treat guests/"strangers" is tied to who we are.

We were pleased to see many MPs speak out about the divisive, harmful and racist language often used to talk about people seeking safety in the UK. This is vital as language holds power and gives way to real life consequences, including the violence and disorder we have seen on our streets. 4/🧵
