people should be morally outraged about every dimension of what happened to Aaron Swartz, enough to want to utterly dismantle the system that did it to him, but instead more and more people have decided it should happen to more people instead

hey quick question: why did you grant anonymity to a source whose identity is already published and easily accessible? was it because he's an avowed eugenicist and white supremacist? or simply because you're a moron?

Check out our new paper in Science Advances! 🧪🔭🪐 We show that Vesta’s giant equatorial troughs—Divalia Fossae—likely formed from spin axis reorientation and despinning as a long-term consequence of the two massive impacts near the south poles. 🪨⚒️ www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

I strongly believe in a true abundance agenda: -Open borders (goods + people) -UBI funded by land value taxes -Zoning Reform -Gov't investment in renewable energy I think this agenda could make the country more prosperous with minimal market disruption/redistribution It polls at probably 12%

Please don’t use my friend’s name to make this point in this way, especially inaccurately. He was *not* sentenced. And the JSTOR articles he wanted people to have unfettered access to, including for purposes of machine learning analysis, are also copyrighted material. You can just critique OpenAI.

When I lived in Beijing circa 2019, the only thing Beijingers wanted to talk about with a white guy who spoke mandarin was the trade war, which to me at the time felt like small potatoes. I wonder what they are thinking now.

It’s also a problem that large swaths of the left (esp online) advocated for full employment type policy, got it (from both electeds *and* the Federal freakin’ Reserve), and then spent two years screeching about how bad it was. Unforgivably bad political messaging.

very good section in Tom Ricks' civil rights history on this. MLK et al saw that the media reacted 10000% more to white activists getting the exact same beatings as Black ones, and were like "man, that is incredibly racist. now, get those white folks up front, right next to the cops"

US wealth inequality very meaningfully declined through the last 5 years but it was in no small part a direct consequence of the wage-cost differential shifts you're mad about. workers wage gains and deflation *categorically* cannot coexist.

How destroying 10,000 homes at the top of the market causes rents to balloon all the way down the income ladder should feel intuitive and yet people resist the idea that building new homes at the top of the market can lower rents for middle class people even tho its the same process in reverse

What's amazing about Trump is that he listened to a bunch of left wing criticisms of Bush II foreign policy that ended up not being true, but said to himself "It would be great if we did that". He thinks Iraq was bad because we didn't steal their oil.

This is also why I don’t think of making people more anti-establishment as a net good like some on the Left - a lot of times it just makes weird cranks with incomprehensible politics and those people may not actually be your allies.

One of the key advantages of democracy is the ability to course correct. We have a fighting shot at getting onto a better path in the US, but China basically has to hope Xi dies and then they get lucky with whoever wins out next. Much harder to win a dice roll once per generation vs 4 years

You don't need to imagine a Trump foreign policy. He was president already. Bombed a govt the US hadn't before (Syria), killed a foreign commander for the first time since WWII (Iran), broke treaties, launched drone strikes, more. Agree/disagree with any of that, anti-war or pro-restraint it is not.
