We're All the Animals - 2
Corny sticker at expo today. This show is afraid of me. I have seen its true face.

The aisles are extended gutters, and the gutters are full of fanart and keychains...

The accumulated waste of their trinkets will pile up about their waists, and they will look up and shout "Save us!" ...
... and I'll look down and whisper "No."

I'm so sorry, but I don't know what this bit is, dude

KING OF THE DEAD (1977) Gouache on illustration board - 24” x 14” I had the good fortune of working on Elric early in my career. The books by Michael Moorcock have proven to be enduring classics in fantasy. #art #booksky 🪐📚
Elric holds the slender black blade of Stormbringer as he turns in surprise toward a menacing skeletal figure. His gold cloak billows as he pivots, and the gold chain gripped in his other hand slackens as the ruby amulet bobs weightless with sudden motion. Arms flexed wide, the threatening figure grips a black trident. Beneath a horned helm, its skull is set in a deathly howl that exposes its fangs. With eyes flashing, a mass of figures skulk among smooth pillars in the background. Several of the ape-like humanoids flank Elric in the lower foreground.

This photograph captures the essence of kōyō (or momijigari, the seasonal custom of autumn foliage viewing), a cherished pastime in Japan that dates back to the refined courtly culture of the Heian period (794–1185).
Framed in a breathtaking display of autumn brilliance, a towering canopy of fiery crimson Japanese maple (momiji) and luminous golden ginkgo (ichō) expands above a rugged, hand-stacked stone retaining wall (ishigaki). At the base of the wall, a thick, glowing carpet of fallen ginkgo leaves covers the earth like a golden tapestry. Standing amidst this fallen foliage are two quiet figures holding bright, matching umbrellas—one vibrant yellow and one deep red—strikingly echoing the dual-colored canopy towering above them. The soft, diffused light of a damp autumn day illuminates the scene, evoking the tactile coolness of mountain air, the subtle scent of damp earth, and the quiet rustle of fallen leaves underfoot.
Both the maple and ginkgo serve as quintessential fūbutsushi—poetic seasonal markers that signify the peak of autumn across the archipelago. The presence of the weathered stone masonry and the corner of a traditional timber building suggests the sanctuary of a temple or shrine precinct nestled in the mountains. Here, the deliberate integration of architectural stonework with the surrounding forest demonstrates the enduring tradition of Japanese monozukuri (artisanal mastery in environmental design), where human cultivation acts in gentle harmony with the wild cycles of nature.

Captured within the grounds of Engaku-ji—one of Kamakura’s five great Zen temples (Kamakura Gozan)—this image embodies the profound historical union between Zen Buddhism and kyūdō (the Way of the Bow).
A brilliant shaft of golden sunlight pierces the dim interior of a wooden temple hall, illuminating the taut form of an archer at the peak of draw (kai). Positioned in three-quarter rear profile, the practitioner holds a tall, asymmetrical bamboo bow (yumi), its curves catching sharp highlights alongside the golden shaft of the horizontally aligned arrow (ya). The extended arm and the intricate folds of a patterned pale kimono are brought into crisp relief by the directional beam, while a crisp white cord (tasuki) binds the wide sleeve back to free the shoulder for movement. Surrounding the figure, deep, ink-like shadows blanket the massive timber pillars and soft green foliage outside, creating a moment of suspended kinetic breath where light and form coalesce.
Founded in 1282 by the regent Hōjō Tokimune following the Mongol invasions, Engaku-ji has served for centuries as a center for Rinzai Zen practice, where the samurai class honed both spiritual discipline (zazen) and martial arts. In kyūdō, shooting is treated not as a competitive sport aimed at hitting a physical target, but as a form of standing meditation (ritsu-zen) rooted in selfless focus (mushin). The hand-laminated bamboo bow and hand-tied tasuki represent centuries of specialized Japanese monozukuri (artisanal craft), where the tools of the archer become direct extensions of the mind and spirit.
