#WipSnip of this random fantasy/dark fantasy thing I started writing to give myself a break #BookSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #WriteSky
Text:

The gateway led into a blackened hallway, the sconces along the stone walls becoming fewer and farther in between the longer I went. A trap. I've walked into a trap.
Just when I turned a voice echoed from all sides,
"Come to me. Come to me."
"I don't think I want to." I said back.
"I have what you seek. I have news of your wife." It was then I realized the voice was coming from inside my own head. I didn't care about that though. The mere mention of Akira had me bolting into the darkness.
From the side I spotted light, the closer I got the more I could make out a bedroom door.
"Hurry." The voice pleaded.
I burst into the room, the door slamming against the wall. Whatever I expected to find, it was certainly not a brightly colored room, and a woman lying face down on the ground as if she'd just collapsed

It wasn't Kip's fault, but it wasn't coffee either - Poe's outside to try to escape an impending panic attack caused by his persistent imposter syndrome 😅 From Byron's arc of The Atlas Brothers Break the Multiverse #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #AmWriting
“Poe?” Kip stuck his head out the door, a look of mild concern on his face. “You ok?”
Poe clenched his fists to hide his shaking hands. He nudged the water back near the fire, as if heating it had been his entire reason for coming outside in the first place. “Yeah. Just making more coffee.”
“Sweet.” Kip paused a second, then came fully outside to lean against the brick wall near Poe. “Was I being a handful again? Sorry. I can’t always help it.”
Poe sighed, shaking his head fondly. “You’re always ten and a half handfuls, Kip,” he said without any bite. “But I really was just coming to make coffee.”

From "Unifier: The Seven Labors of the White-Haired Woman" #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
Talla ran her fingertips over the fabric’s edge. It was very fine quality: soft and sturdy. The embroidery was intricate and of superb workmanship. Try as her well-attuned eyes might, they could find not a single flaw in the pattern or craft.
“This is really nice stuff.”
Her wife’s voice came from the next room, raised just enough to be heard over the running water.
“I’m abdicating, not taking a vow of poverty. Speaking of…” She appeared in the doorway, her freshly-washed locks barely damp any longer. A good towel and a fresh sheering would do that. It was cut especially trim around the back and sides, with the hair atop her head allowed a few more inches.
“Holy crap.” Her wide-eyed wife set aside the bundle of black fabric and rose from the bed to meet her.
“Well, I’m technically not the queen right now, so…”
“Oh, wow.” Talla marveled at the head of her partner, ran her fingers through the thick, shortened hair. “Do you like it?”
“I’ve missed having short hair.”
“I’ve missed seeing it on you. This is how I remember you.”
“You never knew me with short hair.”
“No, but this is how you looked my bedroom wall.”
That brought a smile to Val’s face.
“This, two decades younger.”
“Hardly.”

#WIPSnips Wall gets us a description of Dorrain (roll your r's), the sky city of witches. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
The city of Dorrain sprawled across the floating disk. A wall that stretched a few feet above the perimeter buildings and a transparent domed shield kept the city from feeling the effects of the thin air outside. A faint hum of the motors that kept the city afloat mixed with the rustling of the trees in the artificial breeze. Rollan imagined that they ran the motors on a mixture of magic and mechanical energy— or did he imagine it? Such things were becoming commonplace for Rollan. He had never felt so muddled.
With the air of a perfect utopia, the city was a mix of carved stonework and greenery. The raised walkways gave the illusion that the canopies of the trees were mere bushes. Rollan was in awe as he was led through. Every tree bore some sort of fruit. Vined vegetables curled up trees and lattice work. Everything had a purpose.

#WIPSnips #WritingCommunity #amquerying #writesky #epicfantasy 💙📚 🪐📚 From Epic Fantasy WIP, Waking the Saints, Queen Lualih has finished her audience and meets an unexpected intruder. Previous skirmishes with the Northmen make this ambassador suspect.
Lualih tore the pins from her coolan and handed the crown to her lady-in-waiting. Her head floated, released from the weight, as she escaped the audience room to a back hallway of the palace.
“Lady Juho, did you bring the maps?” Lualih peeled a sweaty partlet from her shoulders, tossing it to the hovering servant following her brisk steps.
A portrait of a stiff woman dressed in an ancient mode, some forgotten second or third wife of a Huxen king, graced the wall. Even here, the luxury of an artist’s craft consigned to an obscure corner.
The map of Gorel barony slid into Lualih’s hand. She glowered at the shadow of Master Vetal on the page, without slowing her walk. “How many of Gorel’s neighbors–”
An unframed door opened ahead of her, admitting a fur-capped man with braided white hair and a long tunic.
“Blessings upon you, Your Majesty. A moment of your time?”
Master Vetal shoved the stranger against the wall, shielding Lualih with his body. Another painted ancestor passed judgment from within a gilded frame.
“Is this how you greet a foreign dignitary?” the Northman protested.
Vetal continued to pin the man’s arms. “You’ll note my lethal weapons are still sheathed. Who are you and how did you get in here?”
“Ambassador Quimmik, at your service. As the ambassador from Chief Bear, I knew I was unlikely to get a formal audience, so I observed where Queen Lualih went between appearances.”

An image of a dark bedroom in a castle lit but wall sconces but the black text box over it only leaves the bed and candles in view. The black text box says : It had been too dark in the alley to see if he had looked at her the same way he was now, not like something to be revered but someone to be worshipped. The heat behind it only intensified when his gaze dropped to her mouth. “Kiss me again and find out, Idol.”
The title came out like a taunt, like a yearning for her to make that move, to consent to whatever was about to happen. She didn’t start these kinds of moments, didn’t know what to do with the control he gave her; she could tell him to get out, to step back, or a one-word answer of No, but—
None of those options appealed to her. “Kiss me yourself if you—”
There was no hesitation, no graceful transition—one second she was standing in front of him with only inches separating them, and then his mouth was set on hers.
Kassidy stumbled back, her back hitting the wall, and then he trapped her against him again.

#WIPSnips The word for October 5 is WALL In NOMARA, Kharys is a traumatized child who grows to be a traumatized man; he survives by being resilient. This snip reveals his coping techniques among the nomari, who are raising him to serve their Queen. CW: grooming #WritingCommunity #WriteSky #SFF
Text excerpt from NOMARA, a science fiction WIP by L.L. Stephens. Snip shows Kharys as a captive child being raised by the nomari for eventual service to their Queen. The nomari use human men for sex and companionship.

Resigned that he was safe, Kharys allowed them to teach him their ways. Their language became his own, their strangenesses became familiar. Only he was always alien, a stranger, isolated behind walls, allowed to go abroad only if he was concealed by layers of silk and veils of gauze, with spear-carrying warriors to guard him—a thing that could see and hear and think, that others must never see, or hear, or think about. After a time, he learned to regard the hated garments as a hiding place. Through his veils he observed the nomari and their world as if in a dream. They were shadows, living in a shadow world, and he alone was real. Only his own chambers, where he was allowed to walk unveiled, had harsh, clear lines and hard color.
Greater passing followed the lesser, three moons sailing the river of stars, stringing themselves into a necklace of years. Kharys learned to look for the beautiful, older Queen, recognizing that she had become his mistress. He wanted to ask her why she kept him like this, apart, for no apparent purpose. But whenever she visited the secluded chambers that were his, he found his tongue rendered mute by the same worshipful silence that made his keepers bow away, and the golden Queen of the Others would leave him as she had found him, without answers. One thing only would she do, and that was to kiss him, always gently, on the lips.

From CultWIP. Rowan returns late and empty-handed. Natalia waited up for him, but so did Father Silas. #WIPSnips #writingprompts #writingcommunity #writesky
“Is he angry?” he asked.

Natalia shifted uncomfortably, her gaze darting away and refusing to return. “He had to postpone the cleansing ceremony. A lot of people are angry. I heard Alec tell Mother and Father that he thinks you're fucking up Rekshimyr's awakening, and he thinks it's because they were too soft on you growing up. They were humiliated. They went back to their chambers, and I haven't seen them since.”

His parents were humiliated by him all the time, every single day that it was their son that lived and not their god, so he wasn't concerned about what they thought of him. “Father Silas…” he said. “Is he angry?”

Natalia chewed her bottom lip and suddenly found a loose string on her shirt very fascinating. “He's furious. Not the yelling, throwing things, smacking people around kind of furious. The calm and quiet furious, where you can't really tell he's mad unless you know him really well. I could see the vein pulsing in his temple though. It's the size of a damn worm.”

Rowan sighed and leaned back against the wall next to Natalia, folding his arms over his knees. “That's what I thought.”

From book 1. WIP is the final book in the trilogy. Bertram and Catrin are deep in dragon territory. 🏰🐉 #WIPsnips #writingcommunity #writesky #writingprompts
28: Not Alone
"Take my hand," Cat told him.
He reached up, felt sweat drip down his face, but she used her strength to pull him the last bit. Some might have felt like a weakling having to rely on a woman to pull them up a hill, but Bert didn't mind. Besides, he was carrying both their packs.
"Look back, Bert," she said, sitting on a rock and drinking deeply from her waterskin.
He used the break to push back his sopping wet hair from his eyes, drop the bags on the ground and collapse fully on his back. After a few deep breaths, he took Cat's advice and sat up and turned around. "Is that..."
"Wyrmgate." She raised her eyebrows. "Can you believe it?"
He couldn't. He raised his thumb and easily covered the entire town, but it was unmistakable. The walls, the castle and tower—it was clearly home. He'd spent most of his life in that town, always thinking of it as basically the whole world. The market, the abbey, the castle and tower that seemed to scrape the sky itself. Now, he realized it was literally a smudge on the landscape. Not even enough for his thumb to cover. The world, and their quest, was so much bigger than one town. "Cat, I can't believe it. We've come so far. And we're so high up!"
Cat nodded. "Haven't you noticed it in your legs? We've been moving steadily higher for a few days now. We're on the hills we're used to seeing from back home. I have no idea what lies beyond them. Eldritch theorized that perhaps the dragons had some sort of cities of their own beyond these hills." She smiled at the idea.
Bert had never really thought of how dragons lived. The idea that they existed at all was just sort of a thing you learned as a child. It was just a fact of nature. One didn't consider the how of the wind, or the shining sun. It all simply was, just like dragons. "Cities?"
Cat shrugged. "Not in the way we live, obviously..."
"Obviously." He chuckled. As if everyone knew this sort of thing.

Today’s #wipsnips word is “wall” #writingcommunity #writingprompts #writersky #writesky
“Do you think Anne’s thinking the same thing? That Marc’s, what did you call it? Scenting whatevering? That maybe that’s why she told you not to waste your time? Maybe she’s bracing for what she feels is inevitable by detaching.”

“It’s a ridiculous thing to say, regardless. Just because that’s his plan, if that is his plan, doesn’t mean there isn’t still hope of changing his mind. There’s always hope and we should always keep trying until… well, until nothing. We should just keep trying. Because it’s Marc.  Because it’s the right thing to do. Because I can’t lose him, Al.”

I felt myself getting hysterical, my breath getting short, my fists clenching, the walls of my chest tightening. Allie pulled me in to her, my head burying in her shoulder. “I know, B. I know. But I’m not the one you need to be saying all of this to.”

A homeless man finds a strange figure in an alley From 'Fusion Punk buddy cop' #WIPSnips #WriteSky
Pete froze; he didn't want to come across a raccoon again so soon. He took a few gingerly steps to get a view of what was there. He expected any kind of small, fluffy creature, but what he found was a lot bigger.
A figure sat there propped against the wall on the ground, feet sprawled out, head hanging down. The clothes were weird: too clean and a strange style. Black leather boots and white stockings that looked crochet. Black matte leather pants reached over the knees and were tied off by a built-in cord, holding the stockings in place. A white, collared shirt peaked out from behind a red, patterned vest and a finely felted suit jacket of a dark brown colour. A brass chain hung out of the vest pocket, and a slice of a large pocket watch was seen. The homeless man debated whether to take it, but then he remembered the police car from before.
The figure also had a tophat whose top was not flat but sloped backwards, and fixed on it were some kind of welding goggles. The hat was drawn into the figure’s face, and they were still. Panic spread in Pete - what if the figure was dead?

Will and Mikey rested their backs against the cool brick wall on a hijacked locker room towel placed over a bald patch of ground. The sound of scuffling feet, bouncing basketballs, and an occasional swear—followed immediately by a teacher's stern reprimand—cut through the otherwise silent morning air. Will did not feel the least bit remorseful about skipping class and hiding behind the building named after his late human father; he knew that the man would have been more insulted by a high school gymnasium being named after him in the first place.

Gritting his teeth, his eyes down to squints, he pushed his way out of the chamber and grunted to pull the hatch closed behind him. It only took seconds – practice was both tiresome and a blessing – but by the time Mac dogged the hatch the storm had soaked him to the bone and his muscles ached from exertion. Water hammered the walls of the ship as if God's own power washer were directed against the harbor. Salt water leapt from the sea while fresh rain avalanched out of the sky. Thunder bellowed fractions of seconds behind million-candlepower strobes of lightning. The flashes made Mac see spots. The roars rattled against his guts.
And this wasn't even the hurricane, just a sideswipe from the thing eating the Yucatan.

It's a hidden brick-front and she realizes he's cancelling its wards. He doesn't lead her upstairs to any rooms. Instead, he stops right there in the vestibule and, in a bit of pitch black magic, Rose's back is against the wall.

He's too close for her to reach her wand, even if she wanted to, as if that would do anything. But maybe a nice shove to the chest —

That doesn't do anything, either.

"Sir, wait —“

"For what?"

His hand is in her hair — at her mouth, his fingers making her lips feel thick and lewd and strange and —

He is broad and heavy and her arms are in the wrong position to do anything about it. He's holding her bodily to the wall, there's nothing she *can* do, except smell her own pomade in his hair, feel the fine weave of his fancy robes, feel *him* underneath them —

"You say you want to be touched. And you want *me* to do the touching. You *begged* me —“

It's true. She did beg. She's begging now.My Dearly Demented by rachels_memories

#WIPSnips An important scene during Jane and Liz's first date, as they relax in a cathedral, and open up to each other. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
Liz sighed. “Have you tried talking to him? I heard that he was doing better.”

I shook my head. “I know that if I do… all the walls I built will come crashing down. I hate pushing him away like this, but I can’t let him get hurt again. Not because of me...”

A creeping silence enveloped the space between us. My thoughts pulled away from Liz, and once again, I felt alone with my own regrets.
After a moment though, Liz’s voice slowly began pulling apart the silence, word by word. “If it helps, I know what that feels like. I did the same thing once, decades ago. That… old girlfriend I mentioned? Well, she heard I was hanging around in Marapul after the war, and came to find me. But I was afraid, just like you. I pushed her away too.”

“Do you think… Was it the right decision?”

“I don’t know.”

The silence returned, but it wasn’t long until she tried again. Yet that time, her voice felt more relaxed, as she spoke in a far more melancholic tone. “When you visited me in the hospital, you asked me a question that I never answered. Or... I suppose that I was afraid of answering. Something like, ‘Is it better to live in fear alone, or risk the lives of the people you care about.’ Truth is, I don’t have an answer. Never have. Instead, I always feel like I end up doing both…”

Vela on a very early morning walk through the Consortium city of Euphonia. In 'Cloudgazer' #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity
Where yesterday it had been super busy, the early morning hours were barren. Very similar to the Alliance cities Vela had experienced during her studies.
Yellow and occasional pink LEDs lit up the foggy walkways and shuttered storefronts.
She bought some snacks in the only open 24/7 store, attended by a sole Nihydron. Facilitating the transaction by wordless nods and a card swipe, befitting to the hour. Rain had let up as predicted and Vela set out eastward, away from the spires and towards an eventual sunrise.
Cool fog flurried through the urban abyss to her right. A few skimmers flew past citywards. The leafy overgrown walls dripped from the nightly shower, water pooled in big reflective puddles. Undisturbed so far. The city was slowly coming alive. The higher spires started glowing red in the rising sun.

Dagna didn’t look convinced. “A bunch of stone columns? They don’t look very alchemical to me.”
As if on cue, a wall of silent blue fire erupted between the stones far to the left, bridging the hundred meters between them with a bright curtain of alchemical energy. The phenomenon traveled between the steles within moments until it disappeared to the right. As quickly as it had appeared, the cold fire vanished again, leaving behind unsinged grass. Nothing but the bright afterimage in Kraghtol’s eyes indicated it had ever been there.

#WIPSnips October 5 "wall" From A Morris Minor on Mars #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
When Daryl got outside, he was glad that the harbour was near. He had guessed he was on the south shore and started walking westwards. He had been walking for two hours before the terrain became familiar. William Street. The Cross. The wall. The office. He heard a familiar voice behind him.
“Hello Sir. Looking for some fun?”
Daryl turned around and said, “Hello Tom.”
  “Daryl! Fuck you dressed as?”
Daryl looked down at his clothes. He had forgotten he was wearing a suit. “Secret mission from Universal Exports.”

G'afternoon #TFOTSnip! Here we see Milly being introduced to the class all in one go. #writesky #writingprompts #writingcommunity
“Gesa Falkenberg. I’m from Norway,” she says levelly and takes her journal, and I feel a chill tickle my hand for a moment. This one is ice cold, no doubt. She goes to stand next to Genevieve, once again protecting the nervous girl between her and Galilah, and now I’m curious.
“Do you three know each other?” I ask, wondering what the relationship could be.
“We’re half-sisters!” Galilah snaps at me. “Do you need to know anything else?”
“No, not really,” I say, taken a bit aback at the forcefulness. Now that she mentions it, I can see a resemblance around the jaw, a similar shape, really strong looking jaws actually. It’s hard to spot on Genevieve’s nervous face, but it’s there.
“Don’t be so cross! We’re supposed to introduce ourselves, Gal,” Gesa coolly scolds her sister as the next teen walks up, and Galilah sticks her tongue out in reply.
The new kid is taller than I am but thin like a twig. White hair and near-white irises, a bit greyer than the eye-whites, enough to distinguish the two. He has earrings and lip studs, and smiles at me with half his mouth.

G'morning #WIPSnips! Milly's first introduction to the students at the school. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
“And to make sure that all bring their side to this agreement, Jeffrey will keep a watchful eye on all for this purpose,” Irena says then gestures back towards where the creature is standing on his shelf on the one wall, in plain view of everyone below. He takes the opportunity to stand up on his back legs to grasp at the air excitedly like a raccoon would do. Strange animal.
One of the trio of girls, he sand themed one, raises her hand to draw Irena’s attention before speaking. “Alright, but who’s the blond pillar over there? She wasn’t here last year.” She points a hand at me while she asks this with narrowed eyes.
“Oh, yes, well…” Irena stops for a second as if to think, and then her face lights up as she turns to look me in the eyes. I’m thinking she’s just thought of something, and I’m not sure if I’m going to like it. Irene turns back to address the teenagers. “This, Galilah, is Miss Adams. She is a new addition to the School as I experiment with some new content. She will be you Self Defence teacher for this month!”

October 5th – wall This prison break is going well! #DawnsBlood #WIPSnips #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts
“Well, as much as I would enjoy that,” the hooded figure replied. “I am afraid we are all out of time for today. I really do need to be going.”
“You aren’t going anywhere, little girl,” he snarled.
“I hate to break this to you, but that really isn’t up to you.” She shrugged. “And don’t call me ‘little girl.’”
As the mage raised his hand to strike, Av’ry suddenly groaned and clutched the sides of his head. Before Mikiva could ask what was wrong, the woman in black waved her hand, throwing the guard into the stone wall like a ragdoll. He slid to the floor, unconscious.
Mikiva’s jaw dropped. “What in the Void just happened?”
“She’s a mage!” Av’ry groaned. “How did I miss that?”
“More importantly, why did she wait so long to use it?”
As Mikiva spoke a loud, screeching wail arose from deep within the fort.
“That’s why,” Av’ry shouted over the deafening roar. “They have a Sensitive here. Any use of foreign magic and he sets off alarms all over the base. Every soldier and mage in the place will be here any moment. We’re screwed.”

From: ‘Soulstice’ Prompt: ‘Wall’ #WiPSnips
“But why Gammer Goodhiding? It doesn’t … wait …” The other mage, Ilbnot, peeked a little further into the cottage, wary of stepping inside, and his eyes roved over the contents with an assessing eye. “Cauldron. Sprigs of herbs hanging from the rafters. Broom. Is that …? Oh, dear gods! It is! That’s a witch’s hat! This is a witch’s cottage!”

From outside, the sound of scrambling, cursing, bickering about whose leg was whom’s suddenly fell into a very cautious silence. Something squeaked. Someone squealed, then the bustling sounds of scrambling, cursing and bickering resumed with even greater urgency. The squeaking continued, intermittently.

“I knew this was a bad night! I knew it!” The voice sounded on the verge of panicked desperation, which was much like any other kind of desperation, but less well tended and with tufts of errant grass ready to trip people up if they didn’t watch where they were walking. “First Death appears. Ghosts. Another witch. Witches everywhere! Why do the gods despise me so? Why!”

“Probably because you think they’re all preening, capricious, ambivalent bastards and you’re not afraid to say so. Out loud. Often.” That was another voice. It sounded uncomfortable and, for some reason, hungry. “Get my wheelchair upright and we’ll …”

“I think ye boys had best come inside.” Gammer Goodhiding, through the crow, made it clear that wasn’t a request they could, and certainly not ‘should’, ignore. The crow pitter-pattered in a circle. “Cremly, dear. Be a good wee lassie and put the kettle on. I suspect we may be here a while.”

“But … why? Why Gammer Goodhiding? Here? Of all places?” Ilbnot stepped warily through the doorway, sticking about as close to the wall as possible. He looked like he’d prefer to be on the other side of the wall. Which was very much understandable. “In a crow.”

#WIPSnips October 1st - "injury" Been real busy with the new job, but I found one word to share. This snippet's a good nutshell of the character, too. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #queerwriters #mmfantasy
Watching the light go from gold to bronze, I tried not to think about my past, but that was impossible. For every submerged tower or painted daymark, a memory clicked into place like a set bone. Instead of headaches and nausea when I thought back, there were actual images and impressions in what felt like an unbroken line.
Before Redemption, I was at White Light, met Corbin, saw my old friend Amos. Before that, I spent two years and some months on the mountain; I clearly remembered two winters and three summers in a small cabin on a mountainside. There was a stream running by it; there had been a wolf that visited. Year two, I’d moved into a cave. I remembered the kills I’d made, the demons, the turnskins, and the people… because, yes, there were people on my ledger. That first year had been rough.
I remembered too the confusion and pain, the dreams and the visions. My brain had been putting itself together, after… after something big. I’d been wounded badly. What the injury had been, I couldn’t say, only that it had nearly killed me. Clearly, it had scrambled my brains. I remembered Raphael’s House, I remembered the Tank, but when? Behind those memories was a long haze of fighting, the Citadel, the rituals, the holidays, years and years and years. I was indeed the Order’s dog long since trained to the leash.

#WIPSnips Zedenko narrates while Gallara relates a little personal anecdote that might be related to the Quest they've all accepted. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #writingprompt #amwriting
“Like I said, I was trying to read when that guy walked up to me,” Gallara continued, as Zedenko quietly made a little more space between them. “It was like he just couldn’t imagine that someone would tell him no. He started getting … aggressive about it, so I finally told him fine, I’d meet him that night. Of course I wasn’t there. The place where I said I would meet him was full of hanging garroteweed.”
She glanced around and acted surprised that people were giving her horrified looks. “It was the middle of spring! The garroteweed wouldn’t have been able to contract far enough to be dangerous to an elf yet. It would have just held him there all night to give him something to think about, without actually hurting him. Well, maybe some bruising.”

I really wish it wasn't like this, that I was far more functional like so many others here on Bsky. But at least the writing has given me a purpose i haven't really had in about a decade. Plus, I have so many story idea I still have to get down. Gotta get them all out asap.

Wow, uh, thank you! To be honest, I don't have many problems with keep up with writing goals because I do not have much of a life outside of writing. No job, no social life, don't get out of the house much, there are few real life concerns that take precedence, so I can just concentrate on writing.
