“Yes. I thought that was implied.”
Neva threw her arms around the elder woman.
“Oh, my God. No, it wasn’t implied. At all.”
“Well, it’s still going to be a lot of responsibility.”
“Okay.” Neva released her hold and flopped back onto the mattress. “But maybe lead with the long version next time.”
“I’ll take it under advisement.” Val also sat. “But, you’ll do fine. I wasn’t much older than you are when I became queen.”
“But you were older. And you had, you know, training and stuff.”
“Military training doesn’t prepare you to be queen. Trust me, it… really doesn’t. You’ll be fine. I believe in you. And you won’t be alone. Jenneca is still your Guardian, and Talla’s here as the queen regent. She doesn’t technically have any power, but a certain level of respect is afforded to her based on that position alone. Past queen regents have tended to take authority based on sheer force of will, and it’s not like Talla’s short in that department. Like the last… like my mom.”
“Oh. Yeah. I forgot… what happened to her, again?”
“Uh…” Val’s lips pulled back and her teeth clenched. “Are you familiar with the term ‘mercy killing’?”
Neva gripped the sides of her hair as her head dropped down between her knees. “Oh, my God. Lead with the long version!”

#AwesomeCharacters Thinking on it, many of my characters (especially main characters) seem to have a similar perspective on this; they can be very patient when required, but have a low tolerance for being delayed because of people's bullshit. They probably get it from me. 😁

She stepped around the man on the ground. He was already unmoving and leaving a sticky puddle in the middle of the tavern.
Her gate bore just the slightest hint of unsteadiness as her boots clanked across the timbered flooring. One had just caught the edge of the man’s blood and streaked it behind her, showing evidence that at least one of her feet was dragging.
She set herself down on the bar stool nearest the middle. The few regulars in the place, as well as the well-appointed barman, stared. She paid them no mind, only focusing on shifting the sword at her side to allow her to sit more comfortably.
It was the barman who broke the chilled silence in the place.
“I reckon you could use a drink after that.”
She lifted her chin to see him. Strands of golden hair barely reached her eyes.
“I don’t really drink. And I’ve got way too many wounds to make alcohol consumption a good idea.”
The barman tried to offer a knowing, friendly nod.
“I didn’t want to say anything, but you look like you’ve been through hell.”
She gave a pained smile.
“It’s been a week.”

The place where this bar existed resided in near perpetual darkness. The sun barely rose most of the year on this hemisphere of the planet, yet some small number of unfortunates had no choice but to make it their home.
The easiest way they’d found to get through existence – and they didn’t try very hard for alternatives – was to drown their sorrows at the local tavern. The place had no name, nor had it need of one. There were no others for thousands of kilometers.
The front door never closed as long as the business was open, so there was nothing impeding the flight of the stranger as he tumbled through the air and cracked against the dry, dusty floor. He was a big fella, and looked mean.
He was also armed, as became evident to the regulars as he quickly stood and drew a pistol from beneath his coat.
It was for nothing. Before he could even turn and take aim, a jet-black blade had pushed its way out of his ribcage. His pistol clattered to the floorboards. It took him a moment of stammering before he joined it.
The figure standing in the doorway – left arm held out, grasping the pointing, dripping sword – was as unknown to the bar’s occupants as the man gasping out his last at her feet.
She brusquely wiped the blade against the back of his coat before sliding it into a sheath held strapped around her waist, all with her left hand.
Everything about her outfit was dark, from the boots to the trousers to the tunic to the weapon itself, and of course the grungy poncho that covered it all. It stood in stark contrast to what lay beneath: a pale woman with hair nearly stark white.
