A sudden laugh escaped her. She didn’t even mean to. As if Xak was realizing the same thought she had at the same time—that she hadn’t laughed, or given anything or anyone even a quarter of a smile, let alone laugh—
“Sorry,” she choked out.
Xak lost his prize-winning grin for a second before both corners of his mouth turned up. “Don’t be. ‘Happy’ looks good on you.”

The laugh that came out of him rattled through her, such a boisterous and sudden sound like she had physically dragged it out of him. Her five little orbs of light flashed to life around her from the sped up heart rate. It only increased further when he locked his gaze with hers again. “That’s not an actual word.”

“You don’t heal like I do, and I would rather not get you back to your Guardian marred,” he argued. “I’ll be fine by morning.”
Her hand clenched in his, the heat in her palm still lingering after that last use of her magic. “It’s not like I know how that works. There are only humans in my world. We don’t have magic people, fae, daemons…you.”
“Consider yourself better off.” Another bitter, grumbling tone, and his grip on her hand tightened the slightest bit. “Don’t hurt yourself to fix me.”

Like a switch being flipped inside ‌her, Kassidy gathered all the power within her and held her arms out. Her lights shot like a rocket toward the Leviathan, cutting through the air and bracketing its face with a radiant glow. That power swelled inside ‌her, the pressure building exactly like it had yesterday—
Then she flung the shards of light into its eyes.
The monster roared, reeling its body back. Its head dipped as if trying to escape the piercing lights; her fingers curled as she willed her lights to go deeper. She remained rooted in the gravel as blood poured down the Leviathan’s face, streams of crimson tears.

Now Kassidy became rigid, thrown off by the tonal shift. Is this why he wanted the other two to go, so they wouldn’t witness this side that she had only gotten glimpses of? She swallowed the lump in her throat before she answered him. “Everything. I feel everything too much. I was always in trouble for it in my world and I’m the same lost cause here.”
Nothing good ever met her when she was a small child with big feelings—screaming, ignoring, or shame…all sent those feelings into overdrive. If she didn’t suppress them, didn’t shove them down until she was exhausted, she would spiral and never recover. Her body kept her locked in fight, flight, or freeze, and she had never been good at fighting.

My gaze falls upon the first lone figure leaning against the wall—a man, blandly attractive. Yeah, he’ll do.

I saunter up to him, my movements too agitated to be sensual, but I smell the beer on his breath and know he won’t care. He slurs something as I run a hand up his thick arm, grins as I fist my fingers into the collar of his shirt. I wrinkle my nose against the stale musk of his body odor and search for the vein in his neck. He fumbles with my skirt as he gropes my ass, but I ignore it.

Opening my mouth wide, I extend my fangs and sink them into his throat.
