If you are an academic who uses arXiv, please consider signing this. **Give Authors Control: Let Us Decide If AI Bots Can Read Our arXiv Papers** math.mit.edu/~elmos/petit...
Currently, authors posting to arXiv have no control over whether bots scrape their full-text PDFs and LaTeX source files.

We are calling on arXiv to implement a simple permission toggle during submission, allowing authors to decide what automated scrapers can access:

Full Access: Bots can read and scrape the full text and source files.

Metadata Only: Bots are restricted to the Title, Abstract, and Citation metadata.

Open science for human readers should not mean mandatory, unconsented data harvesting by commercial entities. Advancing scientific knowledge demands immense time, resources, and intellectual rigor — we deserve a say in whether our original work is fed into massive, opaque training sets.

Not a definitive, but an intriguing study on associative conditioning in slime molds: "Exposure to paired blue light and nutrient alters aversive responses in Physarum polycephalum" www.biorxiv.org/content/10.64898/20… #biology #research #learning #memory #conditioning

Exposure to paired blue light and nutrient alters aversive responses in Physarum polycephalum
Whilst forms of non-associative learning such as habituation are widely reported in single-celled organisms, whether associative learning is possible in systems without a nervous system is contested. In this study, we implemented a conditioning paradigm in the acellular slime mould Physarum polycephalum through repeated pairings of nutrients with an aversive blue light stimulus. We first established that blue light is aversive under our conditioning protocol, slowing migration and producing broader, less directed growth, confirming its well documented effect on behaviour. Subjects were then trained in up to four training sessions by placing an oat stimulus inside a region with blue light before testing with the light presented alone. Trained subjects were more likely to reach the blue light region compared to untrained controls, with shorter latency, suggesting that Physarum weakens its avoidance of blue light after the region has repeatedly coincided with a nutrient. However, engagement did not strengthen with additional pairings, a pattern that admits multiple competing explanations in which associative and non-associative processes plausibly contribute to more transient associative-like effects. We conclude that a history of co-presentation is sufficient to relax an aversive response in Physarum but cannot, within the present study, attribute that change to associative learning. ### Competing Interest Statement The authors have declared no competing interest.

they will be very tempted themselves to turn to AI to assess the overwhelming volume of proposals. And as we know, AI has a pro-AI bias, which will mean that the proposals funded will be AI slop rather than genuine human-driven innovation and creativity.

Had a UKRI funded grant proposal rejected at the "AI triage stage". "This AI-based triage was used only to identify approximately 50% of the strongest proposals to take forward to full human review." 🧪 #academicsky
I am writing to let you know that, unfortunately, your application was not successful.

Review process

As part of the initial triage of the 179 proposals submitted to this call, each was assessed using an AI-based review. Every proposal was read independently by several different AI models against the same seven criteria used to shape this call (including cyber security relevance, research quality and novelty, importance of the problem addressed, feasibility of the project plan, likely outputs and impact, value for money, and responsible research practice), with each model asked to give a score and a written justification with supporting quotations from the text. To guard against any one model's idiosyncrasies, we also ran a second, independent process in which different AI models debated the merits and weaknesses of each proposal before reaching a judgement, again against the same criteria. Scores from both processes were combined to produce an overall ranking.

This AI-based triage was used only to identify approximately 50% of the strongest proposals to take forward to full human review. Projects selected for funding were drawn from those that progressed to the full human review stage. We recognise that AI-assisted assessment is a new and evolving part of the review process, and we are continuing to evaluate how well it aligns with the judgements of human reviewers on this call. We will soon produce a document detailing our method, so that others can build upon it and improve it.

Feedback on your application

Your application was not selected to progress beyond the AI triage stage. To provide transparency on the outcome of this assessment, we are sharing below the scores (out of 5) from each of the two AI review processes described above, together with the mean score across the two processes.
