This AI shit is so groundbreaking it got google to acknowledge fuchsia again
• Large Scale Codebase Migrations and
Optimizations: Argon agents are working on migrating C/C++ codebases to Rust across Google - scaling from tens of thousands of lines in core libraries like re2, libgav1 up to 800K+ lines for the Fuchsia Zircon kernel. Given the criticality of many of these systems, such large-scale rewrites are undergoing rigorous automated and manual auditing, emulation testing, and review before rolling out to production.

i think some people just have some inbuilt need for reality to be more exciting or interesting than it actually is, for there to be some sort of satisfying narrative through-line in any given sequence of events. it’s kind of infantile tbh

Installer packages on macOS 27.2 (and maybe earlier 27 releases?) have a new button style. "Install" in this screenshot is the same as "Go Back" but I had my mouse over it. The buttons have a very slight stretch effect if you click the button and drag.

One thing I worry about wrt adoption is that the core user groups here are largely composed of intellectual laborers with very high consciousness of their social media uses and grats. Making a generalization—but on the whole we're not exactly the kind of folks whose adoption choices are influential.

Absolutely one of the most under-known facts about OpenAI was that chatgpt was like a weird little side project, a proof of concept for their LLM technology, and when it blew up, they made the debatable but probably (from a business PoV) correct decision to toss everything else and go all-in on that

his name is lethargic. he's an IRC chatbot I wrote in 2011 and has been through IRC, skype, and is now on discord (in private servers with friends.) the algorithm has been unchanged since the beginning.
Lethargic’s algorithm

Lethargic’s primary response generator uses a bespoke algorithm that uses neither templates nor markov chains.
Take the user’s input:
	Hello lethargic, how are you doing today?
Then pick a random message from a dataset of old IRC logs
	brb throwing my computer against the wall
Then we interlace these two sentences, one word at a time, excluding ending punctuation:
	Hello brb lethargic, throwing how my are computer you against doing the today wallLethargic's algorithm continued
Hello brb lethargic, throwing how my are computer you against doing the today wall
We replace “lethargic” with “me” and other pronouns so that they are inverted (like ELIZA)
	Hello brb me, throwing how your are computer me against doing the today wall
Finally we pass this amalgamation into google translate a bunch of times through multiple languages to get our response:
	Hey, wait a minute, how's your computer doing today after I hit my head against a wall?

So with Googlebooks (not to be confused with Google Books), Google will have three OS brands: Android, Chrome OS, and Googlebook OS. After all these years, Google still remains the absolute worst of the worst when it comes to any kind of focus or branding.

However, I am told this was an intentional choice.
Google's viewpoint is ultimately to let app developers decide what the best strategy is for their application, and I think that's fair. Google offered me the example of how it approached the Gmail and Workspace teams about whether they wanted to offer Googlebook adopters the web version or the Android app. They chose the former and ideally did not want to offer the Android app as an available Play Store download.

However, I do think this is partially a missed opportunity. Giving third-party developers a choice does reduce the barrier to entry for a new OS, but I strongly think Google internally should have enforced a strict first-party mandate to create desktop-class applications.

Meanwhile, as I complained about in my Pixel Tablet review three years ago, it's unbelievable that Google Messages is still using the same web-based version rather than anything more native.

Sunday nothingburger for you: iPhone 18 Pro Max has a "Prepare to Ship" feature which intentionally discharges the 20 Wh battery. /usr/libexec/BatteryDischargeService handles this by calling [[NSProcessInfo processInfo] activeProcessorCount] and spawning that many NSThreads that spin until stopped
Screenshot of Binary Ninja decompilation output:

void worker_thread_work(void* closure_data @ x20)
{
    void* closure_data_1 = closure_data;
    int64_t closure_data__ofs0 = data_100014f98;

    if (!((uint32_t)*(uint8_t*)((char*)closure_data + closure_data__ofs0) & 1))
        return;

    int64_t iterations = 1;

    while (true)
    {
        if (iterations / 1000000 * 1000000 == iterations)
        {
            id current_thread = [[[NSThread self] currentThread] retain];
            int32_t is_cancelled = [current_thread isCancelled];
            _objc_release_x19(current_thread);

            if (is_cancelled & 1)
                break;
        }

        if (!((uint32_t)*(uint8_t*)((char*)closure_data + closure_data__ofs0) & 1))
            break;

        bool did_overflow = iterations + 1;
        iterations += 1;

        if (did_overflow)
            trap(1);
