Fun fact: "Reviewing an AI made translation" is more work for translators than just translating it themselves, because AI translations do not pass the sniff test beyond the most superficial. It's a loophole companies use as an excuse to underpay translators, and nothing else.

Computers are not some unknowable force of nature or entity. They're products and extremely knowable. Treating them as this mystical new form of life is not just illiterate, it's a great way to normalize this attitude of not being able to hold the people who made them accountable for their actions.

Tumblr post by sunderwight: The current AI situation is like if the people who were pushing NFTs had successfully gotten everyone to start referring to any and all digital transactions as an NFT, thus allowing them to pretend that things like online shopping, downloadable video games, bank transfers, etc were closely related to convincing middle-aged would-be techies to invest serious money in ugly digital paintings, and hold the former examples up in defense of the latter any time someone pointed out that the whole NFT thing was a racket. What do you mean NFTs are bad, don't you want disabled people to be able to use their phones to have medication delivered to their doorstep? Wow. Horrible of you, really.

This is fucking terrifying
Separate research supports the concern. Anat Perry, a Helen Putnam Fellow at Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute and associate professor of psychology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, co-authored a paper in Science examining how sycophantic AI responses erode users’ ability to calibrate their own judgment. The paper found that when AI systems consistently affirm a user’s position, the user’s capacity for independent evaluation degrades over time.

Joanna Stern, NBC’s chief technology analyst and author of “I Am Not a Robot: My Year Using AI to Do (Almost) Everything,” has documented the creep of AI dependency in daily life. Her reporting has shown how users begin with low-stakes queries, such as what to cook for dinner or what to wear, and gradually escalate to consequential decisions about careers, finances, and relationships. The trajectory from convenience to reliance is difficult to reverse once established.

This op-ed is an important read.
Because the same AI tools are used all over the world, the AI chatbots used here in Ireland are also selectively feeding people information that excludes reference to women’s rights, racial justice, LGBTQAI+ rights, social inclusion, etc.

The danger of this hidden bias within AI tools is increasingly understood by many. Research shows that women and other marginalised people are sceptical because they are more likely to see AI as a dangerous tool of control and domination.

Those who are already vulnerable are more likely to recognise the societal risks of AI algorithms determining what information people are exposed to.

KEY
POINTS
JPMorgan Chase plans to deploy Al agents later this year that can operate autonomously for hours at a time, CNBC has learned exclusively.
• Al agents are evolving from tools that complete single tasks to digital workers that manage workflows across multiple steps and disparate software programs, Derek Waldron, JPMorgan chief analytics officer, told CNBC in an interview.
• JPMorgan says Al is already boosting business results, including a 20% increase in private banking gross sales, and could eventually allow bankers to expand client coverage by as much as 50%.

The Takeaway
→ OpenAl is in advanced talks to become the tenant of a planned 10 gigawatt AI campus in Ohio.
→ OpenAl is negotiating a 20-year lease that would represent its largest infrastructure commitment to date.
→ Nvidia has discussed providing credit
support for the project.
I Powered by Deep ResearchOpenAI is in advanced negotiations to lease a proposed 10 gigawatt data center campus on federal land in Ohio as part of a deal that could include financial backing from Nvidia, according to two people with direct knowledge of the discussions.
The campus under discussion would be among the biggest of its kind, with a total cost of at least $500 billion if fully built out based on today's prices for chips, labor, power and other materials, the people said. OpenAI would control the equipment in the facility under a long-term lease and would be on the hook for payments once the project starts operations, with the first phase expected in 2028.

This is exactly it. The work is the point.
When I assign analysis, I am not trying to extract a polished product; I am trying to put the student’s mind through resistance in order to make it stronger. Offloading the struggle to a chatbot does not “free students up for higher-order work.” It deprives them of building the strength to do any substantial cognitive work at all.

this fucking sucks ( from the creator of the cupcake character, lorynbrantz instagram - www.instagram.com/p/DY2v_qXIoQt )
Lorynbrantz on instagram shares a post about their cupcake character being stolen for these new amazon ai shows. Reads as follows

I am horrified and disgusted by BuzzFeed taking my character, The Good Advice Cupcake, and giving it to an Al platform. My time at BuzzFeed was marked by continually being taken advantage of and lied to. They repeatedly assured me in good faith that they would never do anything with Cuppy without my input, yet offered me no legal options, insisting that I would never need them. The news that this character, who is based on my own personality and whom I created as a microphone to spread love and positivity, has been taken and turned into a soulless Al puppet feels like having my intestines pulled out of my body.

Somebody leaked the news to me early on that there were talks happening, and I pleaded with the CEO Jonah Peretti directly not to do it. Instead, he tried to talk me into signing an NDA. Obviously, I did not.

This is an assault on artists everywhere.

I encourage you to boycott BuzzFeed and any Al-produced or adjacent animation.
