Regulating children is not the same thing as regulating social media platforms. Seems very important to distinguish between the two. However, social media platforms tend to be run by powerful billionaires, so easier to go after the kids instead.

a corollary to this is that if oil dependence wanes, marine traffic drops significantly, which helps emissions all by itself something like 30% of marine vessel traffic is oil tankers (haven't checked the stat in a few years)

Last night, after an hours-long public hearing, Monterey Park became the first city in California to pass an ordinance permanently banning data centers. The city council voted unanimously to declare data centers a public nuisance, and to "prohibit all data centers within city limits." My story:

For the first time ever, heat pumps outsold gas boilers in Germany in 2025. 48% of all new heating systems installed last year were heat pumps. Gas fell to just 39%. A decade ago, heat pumps had a 7% market share. The transformation has been remarkable.

Let's stop referring to #AI as #infrastructure and start referring to it as #RealEstate - infrastructure for what? Public utilities provide common goods—such as water—through infrastructure, common goods that AI tends to erode.
