Good Experimental Music: September 2026
This time around we have turntables made of stone, scores from installations, drones that are unafraid to be dramatic, and horns playing with themselves.

I’ve never really been able to enjoy stand-up comedy and I think part of problem is that it looks like music. But where music can express ideas very abstractly and ambiguously, stand-up just explains them literally using words and in that sense it just kind of feels like lazy music.

Prised possession in the collection.. Kick That Habit LP wrapped in a large screened poster Discovering Voice crack in the late 90s was (not the only, but) a huge revelation. So glad my first viewing of the film was on the big screen with equally big speakers
Black LP cover in a plastic sleeve (sorry about the glare) should clarify - LP cover white paper entirely screened in black ink except for two white line drawn figures from the back, knees bent, arms raised as if holding up the edge of the paper.. yellow diagonal line cutting between them, the inner sleeve peeking throughOne side of the cover poster unfolded, yellow inner sleeve showing, printed with black textBack cover, center of the poster, a white figure somewhat curled in a fetal position, perhaps falling or floating or maybe rolling on the floorCute rabbit on the B side center label

The deep truth of contemporary reactionary politics is that, though they mouth dismissal of postmodernism, feminism, CRT, & intersectionality, they actually believe in all of it but simply want to liberate their exercise of the relevant forms of arbitrary power from any iota of guilt.

You don’t need to use AI if you know how to listen to music. Everything that AI can do, and more, can be accomplished faster, cheaper and more effectively via music listening. If you don’t know how to listen to music correctly, I understand that using AI might seem tempting, but that’s a false path.

I am beyond pleased to share that next weekend I will be presenting "1000-Footer," a new work commissioned by Experimental Sound Studio for the 24 channel array at the Pritzker Pavilion in Chicago. The program will be presented on Saturday Sept 12, Sunday Sept 13, and Monday Sept 14, all are free.
A flyer for the 2026 Sonic Pavilion Festival, presented by Experimental Sound Studio

Sonic Pavilion Festival 2026 presents seven 24-channel sound compositions for the globally unique trellised speaker array at Jay Pritzker Pavilion in the heart of downtown Chicago. The result is a canopy of sound—a fluid sonic architecture that bridges the focus of a live performance and the majesty of the surrounding cityscape.

This year’s Sonic Pavilion is part of America250, a national series of arts programs on the occasion of the 250th birthday of the United States. Each work draws inspiration from different communities in the U.S.

Saturday, September 12, 1-4pm
Sunday, September 13, 1-4pm
Monday, September 14, 5-8pm
All works play twice each day. Detailed schedule with play times below.

Jay Pritzker Pavilion
Millennium Park
201 E. Randolph St., Chicago, IL 60601

FREE and open to the public

Artists were selected in an international open call. The 2026 artists are:

Annie Hui-Hsin Hsieh
Black Diamond (Hunter Diamond & Artie Black)
Courtney Werner & Many Hands (David Henderson)
Kikù Hibino & Traxman
Macie Stewart, Lia Kohl, Whitney Johnson
