Can't believe I *STILL* have to say this to musicians, labels, and publicists, but TAG YOUR FUKKIN DIGITAL FILES. If you don't, I'm not listening to them, and surely many other critics and editors won't, either.

At a Kalamazoo record store, I asked the clerk if they had any library-music records. He looked puzzled. I asked as tactfully as possible, “Do you know what library music is?” He said no and didn't seem curious at all about it. Granted, the shop was closing in 5 minutes, but still...

Megan McArdle's WaPo column celebrating the end of the woke left's ability to "cancel" right-wing voices over their social media posts, while making no mention of @karenattiah.bsky.social's legally enforced reinstatement to the WaPo after being fired for her social media posts, is chef's kiss.

Listening to “(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction” on an airplane yesterday made me realize the absolute importance of Jack Nitzsche's rudimentary tambourine hits to the song. Remove them and you have half the sizzle.

If you're looking for vegan-friendly eateries in southwestern Michigan (South Haven, Saugatuck, Fennville, etc.), good luck. Restaurant mentality w/r/t veganism makes it seem like they're stuck in 1986 or something. Maybe Kalamazoo's more highly evolved?

There's a new group called the Great Unwashed who are Godspeed/Talk Talk epigones and appear to be ignorant of the Clean offshoot band of the same name. If only there were some way to research the subject and avoid this bush league shite.

Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe's Inner-Ear Illusions
Recorded with Randall Dunn, 'Manifestations in the Shadow of an Uncertain Land' turns several years of political fatigue into what Lowe calls a "multiphonic landscape of horror," and the conversation runs from Jodorowsky to low-pass gates by way of his nine years in Om.

Holy shit, Tom Stern's Butthole Surfers: The Hole Truth And Nothing Butt doc made me choke up more than any film I've seen since My Left Foot (1989). Just watching Teresa and King drumming in sync triggered deep emotions. Saw BHS ~7x in the '80s—best, craziest shows, etc.

As I was walking by Climate Pledge Arena this evening, a guy tried to sell me a Weezer T-shirt. I felt offended that somebody thought I fit the mold to be a fan. I mean, I've cultivated my entire look NOT to be confused for a Weezer appreciator.

I'm kind shocked that 3 of my favorite albums of 2026 involve Geologist of Animal Collective, a band I stopped caring about over a decade ago: Can I Get A Pack Of Camel Lights?; his collab with Kyle Simon, The Sirens; and the s/t Croz Boyce LP w/ Avey Tare.

There has never been a US vinyl pressing of Gal Costa's most out-there and some would say best album, Gal (1969), and only one CD reissue by a US label (Dusty Groove), in 2008. Light In The Attic? Numero Group? Superior Viaduct? The time is ripe. www.discogs.com/master/11745...

Fantastic “wow, did they ever get this one right” reissue of the debut Magical Power Mako LP from 1974: it fuses about 17 different strains of past/present/future Japanese psychedelia into a semi-impenetrable whole. Allegedly a full-analog job; sounds fab. Highly recommended to “Faust Tapes” fans!
