Give a man a fish, and he eats for a day. But give a monkey a beer and some fireworks, and the weekend starts here.

It's been too long since I spent time with my pedal steel. It sounds like a dream even with old strings. When I get this bloody Blindfold Test book finished I'm going deeeep into this instrument.

I think I would consider doing something drastic if I could get the lap steel tone that whichever Gutierrez brother it is who plays it here. I guess I'm going to have to spend a shit load of time shedding my pedal steel, which is a proper instrument compared to my $300 lap steel.

It's international translation day, so here's the newest translated book originally published by @dukepress.bsky.social. This is the French edition of Jonathan Sterne's Diminished Faculties, published by Philharmonie De Paris Editions.

Tonight I learned that Copilot can rescue a failing pizza place and the lesser Kelce held up a bottle of yellow liquid, said data centers need water, and then touted some beverage's ability to make piss, which is good for data centers also, I guess, maybe. Also, ask your doctor about Skyrizi.

I haven't followed MLB this year and I'm just now seeing that .316 was enough to win the AL batting title. Seems low. Is it because almost everybody throws 98+ cheese? Or that bullpens are used differently? Bigger zone?

It's pretty easy for me to claim ignorance about some pop culture phenomenon, for the main reason being that I a) most likely don't give a fuck and b) I live under a rock, which is nice and cozy. Most of the time.

Right now I am reminding myself just how bloody good the Evans/LaFaro/Motian trio was. If someone plucked them out of the 60s and dropped them fresh into 2026, I think they would seriously fuck some people's ears up. Including mine.

I just got a 2nd trumpet + fx/bass + fx/drums trio promo in 10 days. With 10% precincts reporting in, this might be pretty good. But, is there a effects starter pack for trumpet out there? A lot of similar rigs: big reverb and delay, w/ optional pitch shift/chorus/harmonizer. What's in the water?

Remember how yesterday I posted that everything from my home state of Idaho is bonkers? Well, here's another one. I don't know anything about this guy, but I fully endorse this dude's bonkers message.

I just saw Ken Pomeroy play and it was so good. If she comes to your town and you can go, then you do that. Her voice is a force of nature and her songs are scary good. She has an amazing stage presence and is a master of the dark art of stage banter. Best show I've seen in a long time.

Because it's Trane's 100th bday, I'm re-upping this deep cut: my piece from 10ish years ago on the 50th Anniversary of A Love Supreme.

The news from my home state is almost universally bonkers. Most of the time it's a really bad or unfortunate bonkers. This time it's a what in the hell, ok then, not horrible for once bonkers.

Great article. I'm usually immediately cynical about claims like "lost masterpiece" or hyperbolic "missing link" or "Holy Grail" labels. But Mark Stryker makes a really good case for why the Tiberi Tapes are worth the hype. It seems like there is some legit new aspects of Trane to hear.

Press releases where all I can do is click a link to buy or pre-order the album instead of giving me a way to access more than the first single is useless. It might as well be the first lesson in "How not to get Chris to cover this album."

I just learned there is a book rights territory called The Sandwich Islands. I don't care what I have to do, I will license the rights of some book, doesn't matter, to the Sandwich Islands. I can imagine the Publishers Weekly rights roundup email now....

I found Ornette's Sound Museum the other weekend. I hadn't heard it before and it was blowing my mind. And then I got to the vocal track that sounded like it belongs in a soap opera soundtrack and I was so confused. It almost killed the album for me. Nobody asked Ornette "are you sure?"

Today I learned that there are anti-vaxxers who won't give their dogs their rabies shots because they are afraid their dogs will get autism. Good lord people really are stupid. There's no cure for rabies and it will kill you. It's not how I'd like to check out.

My September 11 post is just this picture of my pre album title change pressing of Jimmy Eat World's fka Bleed American. I haven't listened to it in forever. Does it hold up? 21-year-old-heart-on-my-sleeve-me loved it to pieces.

My alma mater spent what seems to be a stupid amount of money on an ad to promote(?) their football game against their cross border rivals. I wonder how much it cost to license the Future song. I gotta admit, the special one-game helmets look dope though.

I've seen and read some really dumb book publishing takes today. I will now do my best to forget that nonsense by listening to some pop music from Mali from the 1970s.

It seems like at the moment if you're a horn player and you're not at least dabbling with effects, you're doing music wrong. This is not a knock, just an observation.

Depending on what part of my manuscript you look at, I'm somewhere between the rough and 2nd draft stage. But I seem to spend most of my writing time in the manic crayon stage (as seen here) which often seeps into my final final draft stage.

This is wild and spot on. I was born in Nevada, then lived in Alaska, went to college near Portland, spent most of my life before 28 in Idaho, and had tons of friends as from California. My time in North Carolina has not seemed to rub off on me. Also, Big Data, you're welcome.
