For a long time I've wanted a sense of how trump has or hasn't interacted with chatbots (we know he posts a lot of slop sure). And this TIME anecdote about Grok arguably leading Trump into war is just extremely bracing

Since returning to office, Trump has marveled at AI’s capabilities. He is increasingly in thrall to the tech executives courting him. In December 2025, Elon Musk returned to the Oval Office for a clandestine meeting. Trump spent hours asking Grok, Musk’s AI chatbot, questions about his presidency and legacy, according to an official present. At the time, Trump was ordering missile strikes against Venezuelan boats he alleged were smuggling drugs into the U.S. He asked Grok how Venezuelans would react if the U.S. captured Maduro. According to the official present, the chatbot responded that Maduro was a repressive and deeply unpopular dictator and that many Venezuelans would likely celebrate his downfall. After Trump ordered the mission to seize Maduro, the following month, celebrations broke out in the streets. Trump, according to officials, came away thinking Grok was ingenious.

Herrera and French are pigs. They're racists and male supremacists who embody the vulgar, fascist populism of the current GOP. We are only going to see more like them. But they're hardly outliers right now. The tragedy is not that a diverse crowd of young people represents Texas in 2026 but rather that the rank bigotry and misogyny of Herrera and French are an exact portrait of the contemporary Texas GOP. The Texas Republicans are institutionally rotten, and that can be seen at the highest levels of politics.

At the federal level, everyone's favorite podcaster, insurrectionist, and sometimes-Senator Ted Cruz has distinguished himself as a craven enabler of Trump and a willing participant in the ransacking of American democracy. Cruz famously hid in a closet as the mob he helped Donald Trump to incite stormed the Capitol seeking to murder his colleagues. Cruz momentarily called January 6 a "terrorist attack" before disavowing those words. This week, Jim Geraghty mused at National Review that 2028 could see Cruz or some other
"traditional conservative presidential candidate" take the Republican nomination. It's a gormless, insipid bit of fantasy because no such type exists. The GOP is made up wholly of people who either believe in the destruction of our democracy or who are willing to go along with it for personal gain, a distinction without a difference. And Cruz, rather than offering anything like an alternative to that, perfectly symbolizes its moral degeneration.
