While long-term funding is key to the National Cycle Network's success, £104m over four years is £26m a year... the equivalent of upgrading a single A-road junction. CWIS3, the government's four-year strategy mentioned '7,000 additional or improved [NCN] miles by 2030'...so £14,857 per mile?

What on earth is happening?
This had become the new normal. RNLI crew members had been forced to take their permits off their cars after their tyres have been repeatedly slashed. Most of them have been pilloried at the school gates or turned away from local pubs. One man who worked in search and rescue had been beaten unconscious and hospitalised, recognised for TV interviews he had done.

Change the way we travel? Then mandate that councils MUST rapidly roll-out safe, connected, direct cycle infrastructure everywhere (+fund them). It takes 15-20 mins by e-bike to travel across town, but direct uses a 40mph road with guaranteed close passes and only a narrow footpath for active travel

It's a PR dream, that's why. The fact the news source can use "a second donation of £36M" is catnip for them and it does make the story much wilder.

Bill Bryson on the RNLI in "The Road to Little Dribbling : more notes from a small island" (2015)
I had never really stopped to consider what an extraordinary thing the Royal National Lifeboat Institution is. Think about it. A troubled ship calls for help, and eight people - teachers, plumbers, the guy
who runs the pub - drop everything and put to sea, whatever the weather, asking no questions, imperilling their own lives, to try to help strangers. Is there anything more brave and noble than that? The RNLI - I looked this up later - is an organization run by volunteers, supported entirely by public donations. It maintains 233 stations around the coast of Britain and averages twenty-two call-outs per day. It saves 350 lives a year on average.

On Tallinn's Kalamaja Street, a conventional traffic sewer has become a hybrid of two familiar Dutch concepts: the woonerf, or curbless living street where pedestrians, cyclists and drivers share the same space, and the fietsstraat, where bicycles are given priority and cars are effectively guests.🧵

The ID 7 should have been one of the best-selling estates of all time, but they absolutely lost their mind on the design. Seat/Cupra are smashing it out of the park design-wise and it's such a shame that a truly phenomenal estate platform looks like it was chewed up and spat out by VW

The mental gymnastics you have to perform to find fault with the RNLI... These are volunteers, putting their lives at risk to stop people dying at sea. They're from communities where that used to be a common and earth-shaking occurrence, regardless of who the victim was.

We rented bikes from a place in Gouda that had a constant stream of "older" people bringing in ebikes for maintenance or testing out/buying ebikes - even saw a couple of three-wheelers and more accessible bikes. eBikes seem to be powering "Grey Euro" spending in smaller towns (Not my pic)
