Never forget the Luddites, one of the most powerful organized labor resistance groups in history, who attacked machines because employers were using mechanization to deskill their trades, depress wages, and eliminate jobs. Now their name is used as an insult instead of a call to action.

American media's obsession with elite colleges that educate a tiny fraction of the country makes sense when you understand it's the underpinning of our class system (which we pretend we don't have).

Spent some time at a small forge in Missouri- a nice 2 week residency that gave me access to forges and power hammers, and enameling for both copper and cast iron. I went with more parts than plans, left with 2 sculptures built and lots of bits to play with. Ran an aluminum casting workshop, too!
A small iron casting- a circular void in the middle with radiating flashing and texture around it. It’s dark black with bright green enamel in the texture. It has forged steel spirals coming out of both sides on the void, and 3 forged tapers welded on each side.A wide photo of a cast iron and steel sculpture on a gravel drive. The black iron casting in the center has green enamel in the texture, and forged steel tapers radiating from it in 3 main clusters. There are flat bar semi-circles (broken arcs?) around it as well. It stands on 3 small taper points, making the overall work look very light.A closer image of the larger casting, showing the green enamel and black iron of the casting. You can see from this angle that the original form was a cast iron skillet mold that was sliced apart and carved to make the work explosive and energetic in appearance.A small home-made portable aluminum foundry setup- a stainless steel crucible furnace and lid, lined with foundry refractory, with ingots positioned on top to pre-heat. A bucket of scrap aluminum sits behind it, and lifting and pouring shanks sit in front of it. There is a small stand set up using cinder blocks and a steel beam to hold the bonded sand molds during the casting process.

And here’s my latest install in Bella Vista Arkansas- this one (Number 114) is all fabricated and cast aluminum. The central column has lived through a few incarnations before arriving here.
A tall column sculpture, with a dark green central column made of rings of varied size, lighter green tubes wrapping around it, with blue castings protruding from the column rings. It’s on a concrete plinth in a green park area with other sculptures in the background.A second view of the same sculpture.

I posted prelim shots, but never the installed work. Here she is, Number 113 in the series, in downtown Springfield, MO. She’ll be up on site for the year.
The artist takes a selfie in front of a large red, orange, and yellow sculpture. It’s made of rolled round tubing, with a large white painted iron casting at the center. The color transitions from light to dark out from the casting, giving the work an energetic, explosive quality. An outdoor sculpture on a street side- one large circle stacked on top of another partial circle. The top circle contains the large iron casting and the fabricated steel radiates from and around it.Third view of the same sculpture

Well, last night was a nice night. Had an opening in Tulsa, 3 person show with work exploring connections to land, space, and time. I showed from my new bodies of work, so considerably less steel and iron than usual. Still present, still work about work, but with natural materials and found media.
My floor installation, Finding Place Learning Home. Steel and wood pans filled with ground and sifted red earth, Osage orange sawdust, cicada husks, road cotton, salt crystals, pecans, and sycamore seeds. Surrounding the various sized pans are scattered Hopi black dye sunflower seeds and okra seeds. I also included some dried native prairie grasses and cast iron and beeswax hedgeapples. Largest pans are 3 ft in diameter, smallest are around 8 inches. My Tarpestry (Garage Door Portiere). Salvaged tarp the size of my garage door, mended with traditional oil cloth I dyed with invasive thistles, block printed with a pattern from an arts and crafts portiere from 1901, and hand sewn with cotton thread hand dyed with Osage orange heartwood. The tarp is suspended between pillars, weighted in the corners with cast iron thistle bundles.
In front of the tarp is a pedestal sculpture including 2 cast hedgeapples- 1 beeswax, 1 cast iron and beeswax. They are nestled in a small pile of vibrant golden yellow Osage orange sawdust.Gallery photo including one of my tire sculptures. Salvaged tire tread from 177S/ 3w. It’s formed into a spiral with steel flat bar brackets holding it onto a rounded steel tube. Behind, you can see a series of minimal landscape paintings of high plains landscapes by one of my fellow artists. Also part of my Finding Place Learning Home series. A pair of floating French cleat shelves painted with white milk paint, holding rows of small bundles of prairie grasses (both native and invasive). Bundles are tied with Osage orange dyed cotton and attached to small steel discs with beeswax. In front is a wood 2x4 sculpture by another of my exhibiting co-artists.

Installed number 106 from my Biomechanical Evolution series, an outdoor sculpture, on 3 year loan yesterday- 2 cast iron columns and fabricated steel. She seems happy in her new temporary environment.
The artist using a cordless hammer drill to drill holes into a concrete pad to mount a large, abstract sculpture. It’s made of steel tubes, rolled into curving shapes, painted a dark red that references muscle tissue, with 2 large vertebral iron castings painted flat white. The dark red and white sculpture as viewed from the nearby walking path. The tubes sweep up and to the left from the base plate, forming a strong curve upward and around the mounted castings. Third view of the sculpture, from the opposite side, where the curving tubes end and appear to reach out toward the viewer.

New iron casting exhumed from her bonded sand mold this weekend. Cast at the National Conference for Cast Iron Art and Process, poured off my students’ competition furnace. This was made by direct carving into the mold waste from a cast iron skillet mold, and I’m so pleased it.
An iron casting sitting on the burned sand from its mold. It’s heavily textured, with a partial outer ring from the skillet form of its original mold, and a central ring with radial “fins” of metal protruding outward.Same casting from a side angle, showing the bottom of the skillet form. The metal is bright, shiny iron with hints of blue.A third angle from which the original skillet form is completely lost in energetic, textured “fins” carved into the sand.
