A hallmark of democratic backsliding is government leaders stealing from taxpayers and using public funds to try to get themselves electoral advantages. Backsliding countries keep the form of elections, but corrupt leaders render them no longer free and fair by putting a state thumb on the scale.

I remember the vibe shift when people would remark about how nice Burning Man in SF was because of all the people who weren’t around in SF during Burning Man. This video got a lot of laughs cause it resonated:

I can see guys like this psyched that they can use ChatGPT to finally build their political “theory of everything” that models vibe shifts using opinion polls, relative chart positions of different musical genres, and virality of video essays angry about female protagonists in action movies

Yep. It’s also a sign of how outdated they are. You don’t need a euphemism for white when there are actual white nationalists openly advocating for white supremacy running almost every domain of public life. It just sounds antiquated and weak.

Decided to keep a thread here of excellent media and discussions of the deliberate weaponization of hyperreality deployed in a project to shift culture in order to reshape the world into a form desired by those who made up Epstein’s circle of “intellectuals” and those who have taken up their mantle

It's being treated as a policy victory that we have less of the world's smart young people coming to learn from us, participate in our society and economy. This is just so depressing to me, it feels like a complete victory for know-nothing ignorant bigotry over enlightened sensibilities.

One way to think wrt Necropolitics and the Relation of Enmity is that, being beset on all sides by enemies, there can no longer be death qua death. Nobody simply dies; they must always have been killed. And in even the most innocuous death of an enemy, they must surely have killed themselves.

As mentioned in my comment on USPS's new ballot rule, the American postal service was born in 1774 _because_ the alternative system (the Crown's post) let the executive decide which mail not to deliver. For a Court riveted by bespoke historical analogs, this rule is 252 years of unAmerican.

I’d reiterate that the key incident that drove the Cancel Culture panic - a wholly elite project, imposed from the top down - was the sight of Harvey Weinstein being dragged sobbing from court to jail, unprotected by his wealth, and the internet-based movement for justice that went with it.

There's an irony here that Trump is essentially speed-running the problem English monarchs faced in the 1600s: he wants to run an autocratic regime, so he is consulting Congress as little as possibly and trying to rely on sources of Ship Money but that greatly restricts his ability to act and spend.
