A hallmark of democratic backsliding is government leaders stealing from taxpayers and using public funds to try to get themselves electoral advantages. Backsliding countries keep the form of elections, but corrupt leaders render them no longer free and fair by putting a state thumb on the scale.

I briefly saw a Twitch stream (embarrassing, I know) where people in chat were complaining about getting this ad. I feel like someone missed that the demographic that this ad is being served to has, in the past, reacted with violent negativity to sexualized content outside of porn.

They were the children/babies of that moment and represented the promise of a world that would increasingly open up allowing for people to meet and understand each other and work together to build the future. That future has been betrayed time and again ever since.

For a while it seemed culture might start to recover and recapture the optimism. I later studied abroad in Paris in a European Studies program alongside students from all over the EU. It was the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and they enthusiastically went to a rally to celebrate.
