right, exactly. people will respond "what does the fact that i tolerate immense racism everywhere around me have to do with you?", and -- i mean -- they have arranged their entire epistemic universe around avoiding intellectual bias and _this_ is the thing they just let slide?

Tragic. “”None of us have any experience treating this disease, because up until a couple of months ago, it didn’t occur,” said Dr. John Goldman, an infectious disease expert at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. The learning curve among doctors, he said, is “very steep.””

Yes. I think the consensus among US elite pundits and senior politicians that the way to protect liberal democracy is *not* to punish elite figures who violate its rules is wrong. A norm starting at least with the Watergate pardon. The opposite is true. You need to enforce the law and Constitution.

Ernest nails what I'm going for, ultimately. EA's despair that "humanity is messy and self-centered, and can't ever be persuaded to do better" animates a lot of Silicon Valley and (tbh) engineering's view of the world and problems. Rather than problems being ultimately a messy "us" challenge.

The job of president is largely: you get to take credit for things that weren’t really your doing, but that means u will get blamed for the “happened on your watch” stuff even tho presidents don’t generally have that much control over the economy.

One thing a lot of quote tweets of Slotkin’s original post are saying is that that unity didn’t happen and people are lying about it. And I think it’s really important to understand that many many many (many many) Americans did in fact feel that bond. They’re not lying, they’re just incomplete.

I make a point of saying this in response to somebody on every 9-11, but I think one of the most valuable things you can do in memoriam is take the time to think about who was excluded from “that feeling of a shared bond among all Americans” and why.
