One minute these babies are fine. The next they're seizing, or vomiting blood, or not waking from a nap, or not breathing. I spoke with more than a dozen doctors who have seen the consequences of more parents declining the routine vitamin K shot for their newborns. This is what it looks like.

lots of discussion on how this will affect tech jobs, but once again this applies to academia also every professor you know on a visa will now have to leave the US for a green card, sometimes for multiple years. many will give up in the process. universities may not give them back their jobs.

This is NUTS www.thehandbasket.co/p/trump-usai...
Disappointed, though not surprised, I began to describe various life- saving components of USAID’s global health portfolio, highlighting how we prepare for and respond to emerging pandemic threats; support the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis, malaria, and HIV; and immunize millions of children from the deadliest childhood diseases. I spoke for about five minutes, focusing primarily on our infectious diseases work and hoping to keep the attention of people who seemed to have no experience—or interest—in global health.

When I finished, the room was silent, the political appointees looking at one another in what appeared to be disbelief. The silence was broken by Ken Jackson, who chuckled softly and shook his head. “Wow, there really is so much that USAID does that we never knew,” he said. “This is the story that needs to get out there.”

Joel, also smiling, chimed in next, echoing Jackson’s amazement. “I had no idea you did all this,” he said. “As a Republican, when I think of what USAID does in global health, I assumed it was just, you know, abortions.”

I love the form the NYTimes “bothsidesism” takes in this article. On one hand, professors worry that something they or a student says might put them on the radar of authorities and then deported. On the other hand, I don’t have to feel imaginary pressure to say “menstruating persons” anymore!
Christopher Kutz, a law professor at the University of California, Berkeley, said he is self-censoring to protect students, particularly those in the United States on visas. He said he worried that they might write or say something that could end up being turned against them.
"I'm not going to change what I say, but I will try to make sure the assignments don't invite students into making statements that could get them in trouble," said Professor Kutz, whose school has been a particular focus of the Trump administration."You just don't know whether they are going to report you to someone, or are they recording you," said Dr. Smith, who added that she felt she had to "change the way I relate to my students."
"I value integrity and my authenticity and my openness and my honesty, and I feel myself not being that way with them, which I hate because that is what students value: a professor they can ask the hard questions of," she said.
One part of her calculation last year, Dr.
Smith said, was her status as a permanent resident, not a citizen, of the United States. She no longer feels that way with Mr.
Trump in power. She said she perceived less pressure to use terms like "menstruating persons" and that she sensed many students felt the same. The result, she said, was an ebbing of "identity tribes" among students and more open discussion.
"My students are no longer circumscribed in their beliefs, opinions, analyses by identity categories that people are ascribing to them," Dr. Trisko Darden said.

United States Completes WHO Withdrawal

WASHINGTON —  January 22, 2026 — The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of State today announced the United States’ completion of its withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO) due to the organization's mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic that arose out of Wuhan, China, its failure to adopt urgently needed reforms, and its inability to demonstrate independence from the inappropriate political influence of WHO member states.Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a joint statement on the termination of U.S. membership in the WHO.President Trump on January 20, 2025, announced the U.S. plan to leave the WHO. During the yearlong process, the U.S. stopped funding WHO, withdrew all personnel from WHO, and began pivoting activities previously conducted with WHO to direct bilateral engagements with other countries and organizations. With the exit from WHO, the U.S. will be coordinating with WHO solely in a limited fashion to effectuate withdrawal.  The WHO delayed declaring a global public health emergency and a pandemic during the early stages of COVID-19, costing the world critical weeks as the virus spread. During that period, WHO leadership echoed and praised China's response despite evidence of early underreporting, suppression of information and delays in confirming human-to-human transmission. The organization also downplayed asymptomatic transmission risks and failed to promptly acknowledge airborne spread. After the pandemic, the WHO did not adopt meaningful reforms to address political influence, governance weaknesses or poor coordination, reinforcing concerns that politics took priority over rapid, independent public health action and eroding global trust. Its report evaluating the possible origins of COVID-19 rejected the possibility that scientists cre…
