That, to me, is more interesting than the aesthetic facts of these rooms: they weren't designed to be loved by anyone, ever. How many spaces can we say that about? Even the most haunted house in the most depraved horror flick was not designed to be scary, but these dim and ugly offices were all designed to inflict a certain amount of stress on the people passing through them. They were built to facilitate commerce, generally. They're lit with fluorescents because they're cheaper. Their ceilings are low and their walls unwindowed because vast, airy spaces are for living in, not for hunching over a desk phone. Haunted houses scare you by introducing a strange external terror into the place where people expect to be safest, but nobody goes to our real world Backrooms for comfort.
