The real root of the male loneliness crisis is the fact that we have over a hundred songs about Xmas. Thousands of songs about girlfriends. But only a single song about the boys being back in town.

one of the good things about the rise of the DSA has been that it's more or less completely nullified the US Green Party - a deeply shitty organization - among young people.

Remember when US played Iran during the 2022 World Cup. Iranian journalists asked the US coach about aircraft carrier positions outside the gulf and everyone just shrugged?

I wrote about the One Weird Trick That Will Save the USMNT. And no, it has nothing to do with "pay to play": www.espn.com/soccer/story...

The USMNT's struggles at the World Cup can't be fixed by overhauling youth development
Everyone thinks they can fix the USMNT. But maybe the U.S. is actually making progress and luck just hasn't been on its side -- what then?

ESPN: Argentine soccer development system rife with exploitation
The Argentine soccer system that produced the defending World Cup champions is also rife with child exploitation and neglect, according to an ESPN investigation released Friday.

The US delivered their best modern World Cup performance – and also let themselves down
Mauricio Pochettino’s team delivered several thrilling performances on home soil. The way it ended was somewhat less exhilarating

I think this is one of the worst takes on the #USMNT loss, even though the main concern of the article- pay to play (PtP)- is absolutely a huge problem in the US. Just not the *defining* cause of the loss... 1/ www.espn.com/soccer/world...

World Cup losses will continue until America fixes its youth soccer system
Focus is more on parents' ability to pay for travel matches than on young player development

"Build academies like they do abroad!" Where they make mincemeat of thousands of human lives to produce a few good soccer players? The American system needs work, but copying global practices cannot be the solution. Also in here: thinkoutsidetheball.substack.com/p/world-cup-...
The problem is that to produce one first division professional player - not a star or even national team player, just someone who will have a full career - thousands of players have to go through the academy and fail, left to go into adulthood often with little education, few life skills and no direction.

Anyone who has been around clubs, be they Premier League or in the third division somewhere, has seen the heartbreak of the day when teenagers are told they are being let go. That their dream is over and they have to go out into the world with little preparation for the rest of their lives.

Even those who do make it to the professional level can be treated as little more than property, by clubs and agents, selling their rights and forcing them into transfers with little consideration for their career and directing the bulk of the money involved to themselves instead of the player.

i've been trying to figure out exactly why the world cup is making all of bluesky insane and i thinj it's a confluence of our sports posters working territory outside their usual lane and our politics posters being deeply, deeply underwater
The definition of a true fan:
You'd rather see your team lose fairly than win unfairly."the ball knowing curve" ranging from unconsciously incompetent to unconsciously competent, with median american politics posters and median american sports enjoyers way to the left

It's strange to see which World Cup news hit the non-sports side of lib bluesky because what do you mean US govt sabotaging the Iranian world cup team didn't reach them but a 5th red card being overturned arbitrarily by FIFA did?

Opinion | The USMNT is exactly what makes America great. And even Trump can't ruin that.
Red, white and blue covered the stands in a recent U.S. men’s soccer match, in a surge of patriotism that’s been hard to come by for us liberals and lefties in the time of Trump.
