isolated things like
neighbors
like a small

Daily(ish) #SmallPress #books: Lantern: Poems by @sannawani.bsky.social, @houseofanansi.bsky.social & Baby Face / Face de bébé by Sallie Fullerton, @invisibooks.bsky.social. See alt-text. #DSPBposts 💙📚 #BookSky #booktok #bookstagram
Book covers for 1. Baby Face / Face de bébé by Sallie Fullerton, Invisible Publishing: Constructed with the tools of poetic and documentary convention—fragmentation, oral history, rhythmic and imagistic leaps—Baby Face / Face de bébé weaves a portrait of Denise Cassidy, known as Baby Face, the first woman to own a lesbian bar in Montréal. Iconoclastic and authoritative, revered and feared, Baby Face’s story remains nevertheless largely undocumented. Yet for those in the know, the Montréal queer scene is nearly impossible to recount without her. The story of Baby Face is, too, the story of a formative time and place in North American lesbian culture and a testament to those who have worked to preserve her history. https://invisiblepublishing.com/product/baby-face/ and 2. Lantern: Poems by Sanna Wani, House of Anansi Press: A love letter to Toronto, Lantern is grounded in subway stations and city parks yet textured like watercolour and linen. Meditating on the beauty of an ordinary life, Sanna Wani’s second poetry collection, Lantern, explores how we fall in love and make a home. What does it mean to belong to a city, or to truly enter adulthood? Imbued with a quiet queerness, this book is a guide for living in the aftermath of familial rifts, crises of faith, political struggle, and intergenerational grief—all while remaining devoted to an idea of goodness. https://houseofanansi.com/collections/bipoc-voices/products/lantern

My little sister asks me

after Sanna Wani

if I remember when I realized I could die and I don’t, but I wish I did. Did I even think as a child? Do I even think now? So much of my world develops like a photograph, in the dark room way back and is fully formed before I realize it has been there floating in chemicals I assembly-line walk by. If I think in words, I don’t know them. If I knew I could die, I was okay with it. I tell my sister I feel like I have no memory sometimes – I spit shine my own eyes so they’ll see something. The snow I forgot was falling. The ice I walked on weeks too early. If I realized I could die, I don’t remember it. It’s not my death that worries me. It’s yours. If my lake isn’t solid, maybe yours is. Yours is. Yours is. No one else can die because the ice is just a photograph I took in high school. I made you sit on a pool noodle in the middle of the street while I crouched to get an artsy angle. Your skirt was striped and black and white. I think I need to go home.

People / are just too attractive! Heather Christle (@heatherchristle.bsky.social)
PEOPLE ARE A LIVING STRUCTURE
LIKE A CORAL REEF

People love to clean their ears and I love people
very much They are everywhere! Every single
thing I love I love for windows only and if
one window reflects another then friends
for me it’s all over And in the windows are trees
and in the windows are people What are they even doing
with their hunger and in their new shirts They are
taking care of themselves and they are taking each other out
for lunch Oh even the rain has to love them People
are just too attractive! and the rain places itself
on the window in order to be closer to the people
the ones who are eating The ones who are
busting out vigor Oh people You have to love
people They are so much like ourselves

Okay. How to proceed David Dodd Lee
Village After This One

I love you, world, despite my incommensurate
lack of confidence in your keeping on:
the street blowing with spits of snow
turns like a page I might doom
to darkness after reading it, forever,
or until I reopen the book. Then:
there it is, sun filtering
through the air
like faerie dust
raining down as I turn out of the dark isthmus
laid down by a basswood.
Okay. How to proceed
from here: I open the book
and see a thousand black shapes
like birds slowly coming into focus
over a marsh on a windy fall day.
I close the book, or look
away. Happiness, you are only memory
sometimes. But you will die full
of the light that troubles your precious
sadness. Be glad for once.

The Apple

You gave me your heart
like a polished apple
and being young
I bit into it

letting my teeth
pierce the tight skin
deep into the flesh
while the juices
ran down between
my fingers.

But now I’m not sure
what fruit it is
that I’ve eaten
or from what tree

or why suddenly
neither one of us
is quite as young.
