Lost Couplet

When I die, let my body be donated to silence.
The final noise: when I'm clothed in ground.

Sparrows asleep inside a glass violin.
Bells with their throats cut.

The song went: plenty, plenty. I've plenty of bones.

🚨Dream journal moment!🚨Beyond excited to have a poem in the new issue of North American Review alongside some absolutely rockstar poets and writers! Here’s to poetry, a little imagination, and the bizarre interplay of loss, lineage, and memory. @northamerreview.bsky.social
Glass Desk in the Hereafter

I made from my body a glass desk & from the glass desk, I made a wooden chair with mauve fabric. To my right, my brother's prayer card
resting against a framed black & white photograph of a dead dog. At my feet, another dog in her little brown bed breathing heavier
than she probably should. I sit more figuratively than I do literally.
I am sitting inside the paper doll-ness of my own girlhood. I am sitting inside
my mother & inside her mother & inside their teeth which are wider than their smiles. I am sitting inside my father & inside
my brother & when forced to move, I am walking inside the bones of a boy who died like a cliché in the bathroom. I am walking down the hall
& into the kitchen, into the microwave & into the coffee cup. & because my body is the space across which my entire life has unfolded, 1 am a thousand
ghosts that obscure my face in the mirror. I am rain in the hair, your tiny yellow rabbit, wildflowers at the side of the road. Sometimes,
I am a knife cutting through sky. Sometimes, I am carrying around the ball & chain of my own lousy architecture. Sometimes, my body grows
a separate body. I am the stray dog running loose on the interstate as well as God directing the oncoming traffic. Meaning, I am dodging
my own death while egging it on. Meaning, I am in the driver's seat, listening to Celine Dion & my brother is behind the wheel of every pick-up.
He is at the red light & the green light. He is parked at Dunkin' Donuts & just outside DeVito's coin laundry. Mostly, he is beside me with the windows
down, smelling of smoke. & because I am all body, I am breathing into the atmosphere & I am the atmosphere breathing. I am the glass desk & the mauve chair
& the brown bed & perhaps even the little white dog. & because the vast space of my body never changes, the poem is changing all the time.

Stephanie Choi 💙 Absolutely love this poem in the most recent issue of @shopoetryjournal.bsky.social!
STEPHANIE CHOI
Vulnerable
Not one of those words which once learned, I couldn't stop saying, like ubiquitous or introspection-instead one that people can't stop saying to me about what I do, what I teach. It's just so...my friend says after a reading, another friend's dad, and another's mom, say it's so beautiful your generation can be...the Dean of my college tells me he read my book and the poems have such a vulnerable power. My boyfriend glances over the student poem I'm reading and says that's the kind of thing I'd write in my notes app and never show anyone, or delete immediately. From the latin —vulnus: wound. I must admit an apt adjective, albeit unoriginal. The wound is the place where light enters you-Rumi writes, and I promised myself I'd never use that in a poem. I want my students to locate the wound with the precision of a surgeon, transform it with the vision of a mountain lion. Stakes. Risks. Everyday I profess the same thing. They write about alcoholic parents, suicide, heartbreak. I often cry when I read their work, alone at home in my pajamas. But I feel shy about telling them this-how much their poems, even the bad ones, inhabit me, continue to sting like scraped knees. I think about them more than I want to, like now at pilates, in a low lounge, as our teacher whose second language is English says if you feel so vulnerable, you can do this... and sets her knee on the ground—a reminder—it's okay, if only for a moment, to let the wound rest.

Super excited that DRESSING THE BEAR (@triohousepress.org) was selected by t.r. san to be featured this week for The Wardrobe’s Best Dressed with @sundresspub.bsky.social! Here’s “The Professor Asks Me to Write a Joyful Poem”! 💙 More at the link, friends: sundressblog.com/category/war...
The Professor Asks Me to Write a Joyful Poem

One without drugs or sadness
or mention of your death. One
in which you don't beat your fists
bloody against a palm. I am
disobedient as is joy as is you,
as is the better version of the truth
that lives inside the defense. Is it more profound to say walking towards
or walking away? Somehow, with me, you're always doing both: forgetting
the air mattress & your Greyhound
ticket, then forgetting to breathe.
Is forgetfulness a form of joy
or of disobedience? The day I forgot
the plunger at Ace Hardware
was the day you forgot
to put my car in park. You were fifteen,
so my fault, but as the car rolled
nearer the storefront, we laughed
through the panic because joy is you
is disobedience is me, is the weather
we last looked upon your face.
A shit storm, you'd have said,
as we ran out to the parking lot, pelted
by the sky's sadness & with nothing
for a shield, while I was thinking
how nice it would have been
to spend a day with you in the rain.
