"So many people are coming to us who have never come to the food bank before. It used to be people who were working hourly-wage jobs. Now we see salary employees." Maybe we should measure the "strength" of the economy not by the stock market but by the length of the line at our local food bank?

Albemarle Supervisor Sally Duncan Calls for Investigation, Whistleblower Process
September 25, 2026
All of our kids, our families, our teachers, our support staff, our principals, and everyone who shows up to serve the thousands of families in the Albemarle County School District deserve better than what we have experienced from our leadership. The public needs to know that the people entrusted with educating and protecting our students are actually doing so. There cannot be trust without transparency, and there cannot be accountability without the full measure of the story. There needs to be an independent investigation into Central Office leaders including their relationship with the School Board which also includes a confidential whistleblower process.
There is a whisper network of women in the ACPS community and they need to be listened to. I do not know the details, but I know what I don't know, and I believe we all deserve to know what they do. I believe these women, and someone needs to investigate.
ACPS serves almost 20,000 people and their families. What happens in Central Office affects so many people in this county. Holding it accountable for their misdeeds and ensuring there is a safe and healthy work environment for everyone should be a top priority.
The public deserves to know what sort of toxic culture in Central Office allowed the alleged sexual harassment by the assistant superintendent to take place, and why it took so long for action to be taken against Michael Swiney. What else has been occurring? There are whispers of other things.
Racial discrimination. Retaliation against employees who speak out. Complaints about Special Education. Investigative reports that remain hidden.
There needs to be a true formal, transparent, and independent investigation into ACPS leaders that includes a whistleblower process. It is essential that the whistleblower process and …person who has done so much unpaid labor on behalf of the district, and who knows the importance of holding people accountable, sends a message that they are unwilling to do the hard work of honestly dealing with the long-standing serious issues within Central Office. The removal of the Superintendent should only be the beginning of the changes that need to happen. There is a tremendous lack of community trust in the School Board and Central Office, yet people continue to bring forward concerns. They continue to talk to each other. They continue to demand accountability and responsibility. The ACPS School Board chose to sacrifice change for the status quo.
The staff and families of ACPS deserve a school board who is responsive to their needs. They deserve a school board that supports and defends them in the face of abuse and harassment. The tens of thousands of people whose lives revolve around the Albemarle County Public School District deserve to know that toxic and abusive behavior will not be tolerated. They deserve to know that their negative experiences will be heard, believed, and truly addressed.
We have an incredible school division. The people who show up day in and day out to teach, guide, and support our children deserve to be celebrated. The toxic culture that exists in Central Office must be exposed and rooted out. We all deserve nothing less.

I’m so glad Allison said this out loud. A significant portion of Albemarle County leadership (current and past) is pathologically wedded to the status quo and deeply prefers an appear of peace rather than seriously addressing the challenges the community faces.
"When I joined the board, I was told by the older members of the school board that we can disagree behind closed doors, but it's better for everybody if we show a united front when we come out to vote on things," Spillman says. "I said, the public deserves to see disagreement and to see who is voting for what, and they didn't like that."

Being pro-local farmer is good principle and policy, but it’s also good politics. It’s a shame that Albemarle Dems (and VA Dems?) are absolutely shitting the bed on this, especially in such a strong agricultural state. Local politics is national politics is local politics.

Takeaway: affordable housing policy should "do both" and promote both market-rate and subsidized housing: 1) upzone and get high-end housing for free; this indirectly improves low-end rents. 2) use tax revenue to directly fund low-end social housing. 7/7

One thing I haven't had room or sufficient justification to mention in our stories thus far: These raids are (modestly) personally lucrative for GSCO personnel who participate, especially the sheriff.
A payroll sheet from the Greene County Sheriff's Office, dated June 25, 2026, showing "ICE OVERTIME" for each employee who received it. Most employees' sums are fairly low, between $100 and $600, but several officers, including Sheriff Steven S. Smith, earn in excess of $1,000 for the month.

Got these photos from Greene County sources who say they were taken this morning. The photos have changed hands enough times that they lack metadata, but landmarks in the images suggest they're just outside Creekside Ranches off Preddy Creek Road. www.google.com/maps/place/R...
On a rural road, a dark gray Hyundai hatchback is either turned or stopped in the opposite lane, in front of either three vehicles from the Greene County Sheriff's Office, or two sheriff's vehicles -- a cruiser up front and a white transport van behind -- surrounding a third white vehicle. One sheriff's deputy is visible, standing in front of the open door of the cruise. A second figure who may either be a deputy or an ICE agent, dressed in quasi-military gear, stands near the driver's door of the white van. Signs in the image identify this as Preddy Creek Road, with a sign advertising Ryan Homes's Creekside development. In a second photo, the gray Hyundai is no longer in frame, and it seems clearer that two sheriff's vehicles have surrounded a third white SUV-type vehicle.
