I’m waiting for the official county press release before I talk about the meeting tonight, but I’m incredibly proud of the work we did.

Albemarle Supervisors call special meeting to discuss school scandals - Cville Right Now
The division has been roiled over the past six months by arrests and resignations that have put it in legal peril while also damaging public trust and confidence in the school system.

Huge YIMBY win at the CNN Talarico town hall tonight: asked about lowering housing costs, Talarico touts his work on single-stair reform! "Our outdated buildings didn't allow for single-stair housing, which is smaller apartments, smaller condos. It’s a great entry point for homeownership."

But individuals can request an investigation from VDOE, and I’m sure there are parents who are aware of that option.

It’s super interesting; the state has very little control over local school boards and schools. It strikes me as odd, since they love the Dillon Rule control. It occurred to me the other day that I wonder if it’s a legacy of resisting integration 👀

Big shoutout to Reynolds Hutchins for this; if you aren’t getting The Short List emails from The Daily Progress, today is a good one. This is incredibly concerning.
Agony in Albemarle
According to the Albemarle County school division, there is no crisis. According to the Albemarle County school division, prosecutors are lying when they say administrators failed to report allegations of child sex crimes within one of its
schools. According to the Albemarle County school division, "respecting the privacy of the staff" takes precedence over keeping parents informed about allegations of sexual abuse. According to the Albemarle County school division, it's impossible to say how many of its own staff are on leave because of their ties to
said allegations.
If you find this hard to believe, you are not alone.Last week, Gov. Abigail Spanberger joined the chorus demanding answers from the Albemarle County school division. The governor said it is already clear officials have failed to "uphold their legal responsibility to protect children." That includes being fully transparent about just what is exactly has gone wrong in the
county.
And it's no longer conjecture to say that something has gone wrong in the county.
But what is worrying, as a newspaperman, is the county's efforts to convince the public it cannot trust its eyes or ears.It may be worthwhile for our readers to know that an Albemarle County administrator now charged with failing to report the allegations of sexual misconduct in the division once pressured The Daily Progress to turn over interview recordings reporters conducted with division staff.
It also may be worthwhile for our readers to know that The Daily Progress is aware other news outlets are now facing similar requests.
And it is definitely worthwhile for our readers to know that The Daily Progress
will not bend nor break. Intimidation, manipulation and denigration will not be tolerated, not from Albemarle County, not from anyone. For 134 years, The Daily Progress has been the newspaper of record for this community - not its government bodies, but its people. It's not about to break the trust of those people now.
Rest assured, there will be more news coming out of Albemarle County this week, and likely for weeks to come. And The Daily Progress will report it. All of it.
In full.
I hope the School Board is listening.

So many people are stepping up for our kids and staff right now in a variety of ways, and thank you from the bottom of my heart, but it also needs to include the ballot box.

Sally Duncan @sallyforsupervisor.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
We need more money for our schools, and because local governments are so limited on the taxing ability because of the Dillon Rule, we need this referendum to pass. This particular tax will be shared by visitors. By tourists. By UVA parents outfitting dorm rooms at Target.
130
Sally Duncan @sallyforsupervisor.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
But our kids need better schools. Our teachers need classrooms that are modernized, not broken, not moldy. Our buildings are old. They have accessibility issues. There is never enough money to meet the needs, even if all of the money was being spent wisely.

Sally Duncan @sallyforsupervisor.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
I understand why people are questioning why they should vote for the sales tax referendum when there is a raging fire occurring in the division right now.

I just came back from the Albemarle Invite at Panorama, where Albemarle beat Western by 3 points - which means we are lucky enough that we have two of the top XC teams in the southeast U.S. in our backyard. And I’m so glad AHS is in a different class than WAHS 😅.

It's World Homeless Day, and I'll just say: Homelessness isn't some great unsolvable mystery. People are homeless because they don't have homes. This suffering persists not for lack of solutions, but because enormous wealth and power are invested in maintaining the very structures that produce it.

Those of us in the broad housing advocacy movement aren't just advocating for *housing.* NIMBYs want *housing* too oftentimes. We are advocating an entire alternative theory of what growth should mean, and of what a community and a human settlement is.

I almost think of being a housing advocate as, like, being a missionary in an uncharted island. As in, you almost have to assume the average member of the American public has absolutely no idea what the hell we're talking about.

Legally we are two separate entities; I don’t believe BOS has the authority to do that. I asked this summer about our role in investigating and was told we have very little and it’s very specific.

Kind of a back-to-basics piece from me today, on why the whole genre of comments like "we're full" or "this place is supposed to [fill in the blank]" are wrong at a very deep conceptual level. There is no fixed identity, no Platonic form of a place.

I would love for Albemarle County to be known as a positive, welcoming community where we are always trying to find a way to Yes. Instead of shutting our doors and making people fight for the privilege of belonging.
140
Sally Duncan @sallyforsupervisor.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
The question for me is always, what community, and how can we be operating in a way that is more welcoming, more inclusive, and more supportive - especially for those who need it most.
110
Sally Duncan @sallyforsupervisor.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Unfortunately 😅 this has probably been the best/most important thing I’ve learned this year so far. And I think it goes a long way in assuming positive intent - most people actually do care and are trying to improve or protect their community.
140
Sally Duncan @sallyforsupervisor.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Numbers aren’t necessarily accurate, but I also think that in a wide-ranging crisis that involves educational outcomes, special ed failures, alleged sexual abuse and alleged sexual misconduct - plus rumors of more - the failure to investigate and provide transparency creates this situation. 🫠

I went to a meeting of the Albemarle Dems to advocate for this tax and told them I’m perfectly happy to raise taxes 😅. The pro to this particular one is it is partially paid by visitors and tourists. Dillion is really restrictive in this area 🫠
