The UK has dug up many of its orchards and now imports 70% of its apples, often from across the world. Planting apple trees in our gardens and community spaces - and protecting those we already have - can cut food miles, soak up CO2, benefit wildlife, and help save traditional apple varieties🍎

Eastern tent caterpillar (Malacosoma americanum) and moth for #SciArtSeptember 22 “silk.” When it’s time to feed, the caterpillars migrate to fresh leaves together then return to their silk tent to rest. Their social behaviors have made them an interesting study system in ecology and evolution.

Quite emotional to report that we've just found our amazing survivor Marsh Tit, still here in his ancient woodland kingdom. He's now 11 yrs 4 months old, survived the 2026 heatwaves/drought and smelt the wildfires of nearby Holme Fen. I ringed him in my 30s and I'm now in my 50s.

Since 2021, a former dredging site in Cheshire has been transformed into a network of freshwater pools and reedbeds. It's now home to almost two-thirds of the UK's breeding black-necked grebes, one of the UK's rarest breeding birds. Given a chance, nature bounces back. www.bbc.com/news/article...
