Our paper is out in Ecology @ecologicalsociety.bsky.social! We found that an extreme drought year drove a local population of a social rodent to extinction. A sobering example of how climatic extremes can drive population collapse. Read it here 👉 doi.org/10.1002/ecy....

An excellent write up!! I'll add that these challenges are further amplified by international academics, esp from the global south, with the perpetual uncertainty of where "home" will be in the next few years and the lack of nearby family support that could potentially add optimism to plans 🥲

New paper!! "By casting the female brain as the central selective agent, Inferred Attractiveness captures novel & dynamic aspects of sexual selection & reconciles inconsistencies between mate choice theory and observed behavior" doi.org/10.1371/jour... @emilyhduval.bsky.social @servedio.bsky.social

Why do species have finite distributions? In this preprint we find genetic drift is stronger closer to range edges using open data from >37k individuals/ 59 species, meaning edgier populations might not have the adaptive capacity to expand their range. Feedback welcome ecoevorxiv.org/repository/v...
A conceptual figure showing how population size decreases, and genetic drift increases along an environmental gradient to the point where adaptation is no longer possible (the expansion threshold)

Check out our latest on killer whales in the Arctic! With lengthening ice-free seasons we are seeing more & more KWs in the Arctic. We found 2 pop's as genetically distinct as ecotypes found elsewhere use the region. KWs could bring significant ecosystem-level change to the rapidly changing Arctic

We, 3 female behavioral ecologists, decided it was high time we collate the BIGGEST database on mammal testes size (571 species!). What factors influence relative testes size? Mainly mating system and litter rate. In sum: SIZE IS NOT EVERYTHING! Check it out here: doi.org/10.1111/jzo....
