Update on S Henderson St protected bike lanes in South Seattle: I checked them out this morning, & the Toronto style concrete mini jersey barriers & concrete curbs all appear to be complete. The bicycle signals are installed & operating but covered up. I think we’re close to them officially opening!
A concrete mini jersey barrier 2-way protected bike lane heads towards a floating bus stop as a bus stops to let out some passengers A rectangular rapid flashing beacon sits at a crosswalk next to a new 2-way concrete mini jersey barrier protected bike lane that has some of the barriers painted indigo blue2-way green crossbikes painted on the ground at the intersection of Henderson Street and Rainier Avenue South with stoplight signals for bicycles, right turns, straight, and left turns The 2-way bike lane is raised to sidewalk level at a bus stop with crosswalks to get to a bus boarding island

As SDOT's top to bottom vision zero review said, car crashes are a consequence of road design. It's time to dust off the plans and make MLK Jr way s safe.

We have seen the clear benefits from the RapidRide G and the Route 8 bus lanes. We would simply like to make sure that the investment we are making in the RapidRide R will provide similar benefits.

4. We would like metro to estimate the benefits above and beyond the already implemented bus lanes that were initially planned to be delivered as part of the RapidRide R project such as this northbound bus lane.

While we support the project we have four clear asks for the future. 1. We would like to see a plan that builds bus lanes everywhere they are physically possible for the R. Delivering bus lanes falls in part on @transportation.seattle.gov, @cmeddielin.seattle.gov, and @mayor.seattle.gov.

This crash makes it clear that this road is failing for drivers. Drivers shouldn't run the risk of head on collisions from wrong way drivers and the design of the road is a factor in why this incident was possible in the first place.

A person on reddit that was caught up in this delay posted the following explanation for what happened, you can just barely make out the SUV in the photo above

Hoping I dont end up missing my flight, at Columbia City right now. Feels like I'm seeing such a sharp increase in these accidents lately on here, or has it always been thus bad?

Edit: Moving again as of 9:25. Glad it wasn't a super long one. Accdebt seems to still be blocking car traffic but the light rail is moving at least.

Edit 2: Saw the accident, looks like an SUV went the wrong way and crashed into a car, going over it and slamming into a power line pole. Hit car seems okay, but is pinned under the SUV in the front.

Our community, our friends, family, and neighbors keep paying the cost of building a surface highway with light rail at grade on MLK instead of a safe street. There have been far too many meetings with no outcomes and plans sitting on shelves about this street. When will the city act?
