I have no idea whether Terry Pratchett ever read Russell Hoban's novel Kleinzeit (from 1974), but you could at least make a case that they were talking to a similar muse where Death was concerned.

HOO HOO
Sceenshot of text from Kleinzeit by Russell Hoban that reads as follows.
You’re very friendly, very cosy, very matey today, said Kleinzeit. How do I know you won’t start yelling Hoo Hoo again and come at me all of a sudden? You don’t, said Death. But right now I feel friendly. It’s lonely for me, you know. Lots of people think I’m beastly.

We love that Turtle Diary made @jacquiwine.bsky.social's list for #SpinsterSeptember! With a beautiful mini-review of the book. "... as Hoban’s narrative unfolds, their lives become inextricably entwined, setting up the premise for this marvellous story. An unexpected gem tinged with sadness."

Loving this book! 🐢✊🏼
From Turtle Diary by Russel Hoban: “Two of the turtles at the Aquarium are green turtles, a large one and a small one. The sign said: "The Green Turtle, Chelonia mydas, is the source of turtle soup.. I am the source of William G. soup if it comes to that. Everyone is the source of his or her kind of soup. In a town as big as London that's a lot of soup walking about.”

A footnote to saudade: Two of those we recently lost had key roles in bringing Russell Hoban stories to the screen: Tim Curry narrates the delightfully melancholic Marzipan Pig, and John Irvin directed Hoban's underrated novel, Turtle Diary. @russellhoban.bsky.social @mcfarland.bsky.social

Could probably come up with many with more thought, but: I was startled at how Postman's Amusing Ourselves to Death anticipated some of where the culture was headed. Russell Hoban's Turtle Diary is thoughtful about dealing with feeling directionless.

An excellent point. It's clear from Russ's books that he was well acquainted with many kinds of terror, but the Terror of Trends was one he never paid attention to.

John Irvin, who famously went straight from the Harold Pinter adaptation TURTLE DIARY (1985), with Ben Kingsley and Glenda Jackson ("a fine film which movingly charts the sufferings of those who endure loneliness in silence") to.... RAW DEAL (1986) with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Listen I don’t recommend Riddley Walker to just anyone but you’re asking for a brain rewiring so: it is not like anything else, it is (for me) a weirdly spiritual experience that takes place in a world that’s forgotten the concept of god, at first blush it seems impossible to read but it’s not
