Getting a slightly twitchy eyelid when I see whisky brands try to muscle in on Negroni Week. NEGRONIS ARE MADE WITH GIN! If you use whisky, it's a different drink. That a Boulevardier is delicious is beside the point. (Same goes for tequila brands, etc. I see you.)

I'm 56. Racism was everywhere when I was a kid. People just did it, without comment. Normalised. In the 90s political correctness (later: Woke) appeared, and racism withdrew. I'm not saying it vanished. But by 2015, it was socially unacceptable, even in the rough areas I grew up in. Then Brexit.

Got myself a new earring. What do we think, chat?

Photo of your humble narrator, side on so as to display said bit of bling. I am a white bloke, early 50s, short grey beard and mid length grey hair with blue framed glasses and a blue baseball cap worn backwards - mainly as a way of keeping my hair off my face. The earring is in my left ear. It is a small gold hoop inlaid with green ceramic that sits close to the lobe. I was keen to avoid going too Johnny Depp/piratical with it, while still adding, you know, a little something.

This festbier from Thornbridge is very tasty. Lovely robust malt to it, toasty and sweet with a bitter snap of hops to balance it out. (It was a free sample, I should point out.)

A glass of dark golden lager next to a can. The beer’s name is Zehn.

The grain thing is important: none of the other UK whisky GIs specify this, so Scotch or Welsh whisky could be made with grain from anywhere. It's a win, albeit a qualified one — I think specifying *English* grain would have made even more sense. But hey ho, a win's a win.

What is English whisky? As of Friday, when the GI was approved, we have an answer. Main points of difference: - Must be made in England from grain grown in the UK, and English water - Can be made from wash fermented off site - Can be matured in any wood (as long as the label says which)

Dicking about with a little bit of sci fi horror, 240-word #flash-fiction

Doyle had felt something was off as soon as he entered the building. He stood among the kicked over furniture with his blaster raised and his back to the living room wall, waiting for his breathing to slow. Next to him was a door that should not be there -- that Halloran, in his ear, insisted was not on the schematics.

“Fuck your schematics,” Doyle hissed. “I’m telling you it’s there. How did no one else spot it?”

They were hunting a replicant. A simple enough job, usually, but this one was different, used its powers in a new way. It had already cost two men before him their lives.

“You gotta proceed,” said Halloran.

Doyle bit his lip. Moved carefully through the doorway into a sparse empty room with just an armchair and a footstool.

He stamped hard on the stool, breaking its frame. Blasted the chair and left a smoking hole in it.

The stool was just a stool, the chair just a chair.

The only other objects were china tchotchkes on a shelf, gleaming like teeth.

Doyle sighed. “It’s clear. Nothing big enough left.”

Halloran grunted. “They get bigger every time.”

“Last one was seven foot,” said Doyle.

A window on the far wall winked shut. The tchotchkes sprouted, sharper, larger. The floor undulated beneath Doyle’s feet. Darkness closed around him and flooded with pain, pressure that pierced his flesh, ground his bones, smothered his screams.

Supper: rice and lumps. Today the rice is brown and the lumps are “Chinese” chicken. Turned out all right.

A scoop of brown rice. Lumps of battered chicken breast in a sticky “Asian” sauce, topped with sesame seeds and spring onions.
