BOORMAN AND THE DEVIL: It’s rare that you get filmmakers to talk so candidly about a failure as deep as EXORCIST II: THE HERETIC. But something wonderful happens here - you understand the ephemeral nature of art, and how ambition, talent, and skill just sometimes doesn’t get it done. Fantastic doc.

DIGGER. big surprise! went in with very low expectations (Sunderland multiplex Friday night, biggest room, near-full). not many laughs, but otherwise exceeded all expectations. ambitious, original, bizarre.... I'm now entirely bemused that the film, and Cruise, are getting so many negative reviews.

one huge take-away from that José Giovanni retro at @sansebastianfestival.com this month: François de Roubaix was, if not a genius, then certainly a marvel. In tears now listening to this, the main theme from BIRDS OF PREY (Le Rapace), 1968: www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIO3...

HOPE [6/10] 156m?! FFS. Every scene and sequence at least twice as long as it should be. And towards the end the realisation dawns that this is only part one! There's a reason why for decades such alien/monster B-pictures were usually less than 90m, never more than 120. #Cannes HYPE, more like.

Offbeat crime caper with Keach and Forrest as blue-collar guys caught up in a heist that goes south. There's a madcap energy to it that is at times a bit wearing, but the ending - a shootout that happens in a condemned building while it is being demolished by wrecking ball - is fantastic.

my top discovery of San Sebastian's José Giovanni retro so far is the picture I saw tonight, BIRDS OF PREY (Le Rapace; 1968), a politically-charged thriller set in 1934 Mexico. Outstanding trump-card is the reliably great Lino Ventura, front-and-centre throughout as a grizzled, stoic hitman-for-hire

the initial "enigmatic" ad-campaign for the Rafelson/Monkees film HEAD, making no mention of the Monkees or that HEAD was even a film. Instead it prominently featured images of (future big-deal literary agent) John Brockman..... who was himself in charge of the campaign. Self-promotion!
