For a long time I've wanted a sense of how trump has or hasn't interacted with chatbots (we know he posts a lot of slop sure). And this TIME anecdote about Grok arguably leading Trump into war is just extremely bracing
Since returning to office, Trump has marveled at AI’s capabilities. He is increasingly in thrall to the tech executives courting him. In December 2025, Elon Musk returned to the Oval Office for a clandestine meeting. Trump spent hours asking Grok, Musk’s AI chatbot, questions about his presidency and legacy, according to an official present. At the time, Trump was ordering missile strikes against Venezuelan boats he alleged were smuggling drugs into the U.S. He asked Grok how Venezuelans would react if the U.S. captured Maduro. According to the official present, the chatbot responded that Maduro was a repressive and deeply unpopular dictator and that many Venezuelans would likely celebrate his downfall. After Trump ordered the mission to seize Maduro, the following month, celebrations broke out in the streets. Trump, according to officials, came away thinking Grok was ingenious.

I'm devastated by the situation in Alderzan, both its explosion and the asteroid field that has caused untold damage to the paintwork of the Imperial fleet.

Yeah, I could have cancelled the gigs in solidarity with my support act -nearly bloody did. But is that what the people of Alderzan would really want? To deny you, my fans, the chance to pay to see me? I'm sorry, but I couldn't allow that.

I think about this interview with the distinguished philosopher Conan O'Brien a lot. I actually think this is a healthy way to live your life! www.nytimes.com/2019/01/14/a...
Is this how you want to go out, with a show that gets smaller and smaller until it’s gone?

Maybe that’s O.K. I think you have more of a problem with that than I do. [Laughs.] At this point in my career, I could go out with a grand, 21-gun salute, and climb into a rocket and the entire Supreme Court walks out and they jointly press a button, I’m shot up into the air and there’s an explosion and it’s orange and it spells, “Good night and God love.” In this culture? Two years later, it’s going to be, who’s Conan? This is going to sound grim, but eventually, all our graves go unattended.

You’re right, that does sound grim.

Sorry. Calvin Coolidge was a pretty popular president. I’ve been to his grave in Vermont. It has the presidential seal on it. Nobody was there. And by the way, I’m the only late-night host that has been to Calvin Coolidge’s grave. I think that’s what separates me from the other hosts.

I had a great conversation with Albert Brooks once. When I met him for the first time, I was kind of stammering. I said, you make movies, they live on forever. I just do these late-night shows, they get lost, they’re never seen again and who cares? And he looked at me and he said, [Albert Brooks voice] “What are you talking about? None of it matters.” None of it matters? “No, that’s the secret. In 1940, people said Clark Gable is the face of the 20th Century. Who [expletive] thinks about Clark Gable? It doesn’t matter. You’ll be forgotten. I’ll be forgotten. We’ll all be forgotten.” It’s so funny because you’d think that would depress me. I was walking on air after that.

Adam Brody is so good in THE KID DETECTIVE. The pause & delivery he gives responding to the kid saying "this guy doesn't know what he's talking about" ("well...your dad is gay") is brutally funny. He plays the role like a junkie hooked on the memory of once getting the key to the city from the mayor

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Overall I'm really enjoying LANTERNS but the try-hardness of its profanity takes me out sometimes. Don't get me wrong: I love saying & writing fuck/motherfucker/etc but there's a "please notice how adult we're being" quality to the way the show overuses it that's distracting

A six-paneled comic labeled "wildlife tracking tips."
Panel 1, deer tracks labeled "A white-tailed deer traveled through here."
Panel 2, squirrel tracks, "An American red squirrel came by."
Panel 3, hare tracks, "A snowshoe hare passed through."
Panel 4, same tracks with a line next to them. "The snowshoe hair found a sword."
Panel 5, same tracks, two lines. "The snowshoe hare is dual-wielding."
Panel 6, tracks and lines end next to deer tracks. "The snowshoe hare tamed a mount, vastly increasing its jumping distance. You should run."

There is no such thing as art without a human on one end of the line and a human on the other end. In communication with each other.
A city that exists
There is no such thing as art without a human on one end of the line and a human on the other end. In communication with each other. Like a closed electric circuit (?) I could explain that better but I spent my life appreciating art. There are pieces of writing that stand on their own without any supplementary information but there's a reason that when we read a classic poem or short story we usually soon after want to know when and where and under which conditions it was written. Same with music. You can hear a song you like and appreciate it knowing little but the first question people often ask when you play them something by a new band is where are they from? It’s funny that you should ask because they are from a city that exists. Art is a conversation where the particulars of the world are made universal and the universal is made particular. Think about how powerful an engine of imagination it is for a young person hearing a band and learning that they are from some far off place – Tokyo or New York or even somewhere gross like the UK. It is a time portal. It is magic. It even works if the artist dead. So too with a painting. The little information plaque in the museum is an extraordinarily powerful tool. What if it said no one painted this nowhere? Well then you’d be looking at nothing. And now what would you be?
