I am hereby bogposting as far as that's possible, short of posting from nearby or within an actual peat bog. Anyway, please enjoy my extended take on what peat bog and bog body stories tend to have in common beyond really tremendous motifs.

so far, i've read two stories by pamela durgin (whose first novel, 'desert radio,' is just out from word horde) and i sm so deeply excited to read more from her a powerhouse combination of aickmanesque irrealism and the rot that sits under the very idea of 'california.' real good stuff.

in a discussion about poetry in translation, the other day, one of my fellow honkies decided to exclaim that my focus on work in translation was 'imperialist' and 'colonizing' and then said fellow white person tried to engage in THE DISCOURSE and, let me tell you, it was exhausting.

shirley jackson you tell em www.newyorker.com/books/page-t...
ar and away the greatest menace to the writer—any writer, beginning or otherwise
—is the reader. The reader is, after all, a kind of silent partner in this whole business of writing, and a work of fiction is surely incomplete if it is never read. The reader is, in fact, the writer's only unrelenting, genuine enemy. He has everything on his side; all he has to do, after all, is shut his eyes, and any work of fiction becomes meaningless. Moreover, a reader has an advantage over a beginning writer in not being a beginning reader; before he takes up a story to read it, he can be presumed to have read everything from Shakespeare to Jack Kerouac. No matter whether he reads a story in manuscript as a great personal favor, or opens a magazine, or—kindest of all—goes into a bookstore and pays good money for a book, he is still an enemy to be defeated with any kind of dirty fighting that comes to the writer's mind.

My 15th Bugs Bunny piece is up. There's some great stuff in this short revolving around Bugs using hypnosis to turn Elmer Fudd into a doppelganger of himself, breaking the fabric of accepted Bugs Bunny cartoon reality. A pretty good early Freleng/Maltese Bugs short.

ligotti's 'the town manager' really captures the utter emptiness of our current ownership class, just grift upon grift with absolutely nothing behind the shell game, where even the grifters have no idea what they're doing. at all. everything is all cash grabs and futility, moloch and mammon.
