If you can’t think of a story or illustration for your sermon maybe your sermon just doesn’t need one this week. God’s grace can be known in the text and the world for those with eyes to see and without an anecdote 📕

Successfully got a bunch of catechumens singing from the plainsong psalter for the first time today. Universally positive feedback. “Plainsong isn’t accessible to the average parishioner”? Skill issue. Teach them. They love it. 🕯️

It’s super ironic that for the “Season of Creation” we are wiping out whole forests to print massive service leaflets with bespoke liturgies. Want to honor creation? Just use the BCP. 📕

I'll say, I'm ok with the pseudo Francis quote if what it leads to is lives so radically different from everyone else that people can't help but ask you "why are you this way?" rather than what it usually means which is "smile more at your cashier"

So here's the real take-away most people are waiting for from the TEC Trajectory study: what distinguishes growing from declining parishes and can declining parishes... do what growing parishes do? #TECTrajectory 🕯️

Thinking about preaching Romans this week and it really is a shame that nothing in Rite 2 or EOW has quite the same force as "and here we present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and living sacrifice unto thee."🕯️

Absolutely this. A priest I know *refuses* to celebrate the BCP’s Good Friday liturgy because he doesn’t like it. Instead, he adapts portions of it and cobbles something together from other resources. The result: denying a third of the Triduum’s liturgy to the parish. Liturgical narcissism.

This ministry is an absolute gift. I didn’t “get” the psalms until I learned to chant them. And this way, you’re never chanting them on your own.

The collect today is a banger. We do need the leaders of our church to realize that self-denying is their first duty. Not getting more power, more prestige, or a more money. Sacrifice first. ⚓️
O gracious God, we remember before thee this day thy servant and apostle James, first among the Twelve to suffer martyrdom for the Name of Jesus Christ; and we pray that thou wilt pour out upon the leaders of thy Church that spirit of self-denying service by which alone they may have true authority among thy people; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Reminder that we've been robbed of the best verses of "What Child is this." The original text doesn't have "this this is Christ the king..." as a refrain. Past me went to the trouble of adding the rest of verses 1 and 2 back into my hymnal. Always fun to find these surprises. 🕯️

Well-intentioned progressive Christians are especially susceptible to this. We aren’t called to build the kingdom or bring it to earth; the kingdom is coming whether we’re ready for it or not. Our job is to make disciples and live in such a way that we point to the coming of that kingdom. 🕯️

I think a fundamental unresolved, and often unexplored, tension in the large Episcopal Church's drive for a proliferation of many and varied novel liturgies is between the desire to represent growing diversity (good) AND an unexamined cultural preference for constant novelty (bad, prob. unAnglican)

Good stuff from St. Basil tonight 🕯️
Week of 5 Easter - Monday
A reading from the treatise On the Holy Spirit by Basil the Great, Bishop of Caesarea (379):
Our Lord made a covenant with us through baptism in order to give us eternal life. There is in baptism an image both of death and of life, the water being the symbol of death, the Spirit giving the pledge of life. The association of water and the Spirit is explained by the twofold purpose for which baptism was instituted, namely, to destroy the sin in us so that it could never again give birth to death, and to enable us to live by the Spirit and so win the reward of holiness. The water into which the body enters as into a tomb symbolizes death; the Spirit instills into us life-giving power, awakening our souls from the death of sin to the life that they had in the beginning. This then is what it means to be born again of water and the Spirit: we die in the water, and we come to life again through the Spirit. To signify this death and to enlighten the baptized by transmitting to them knowledge of God, the great sacrament of baptism is administered by means of a triple immersion and the invocation of each of the three divine Persons. Whatever grace there is in the water comes not from its on nature but from the presence of the Spirit, since "baptism is not a cleansing of the body, but a pledge made to God from a clear con-science."
As a preparation for our life after the resurrection, our Lord tells us in the gospel how we should live here and now. He teaches us to be Peaceable, long-suffering, undefiled by desire for pleasure, and detached (continued on next picture)(Continued from previous) from worldly wealth. In this way we can achieve, by our own free choice, the kind of life that will be natural in the world to come.
Through the Holy Spirit we are restored to paradise, we ascend to the kingdom of heaven, and we are reinstated as adopted children. Thanks to the Spirit we obtain the right to call God our Father, we become sharers in the grace of Christ, we are called children of light, and we share in everlasting glory. In a word, every blessing is showered upon us, both in this world and in the world to come. As we contemplate them even now, like a reflection in a mirror, it is as though we already possessed the good things our faith tells us that we shall one day enjoy. If this is the pledge, what will the perfection be? If these are the firstfruits, what will the full harvest be?

St. Francis said “preach the gospel at all times; use words when necessary” to emphasize the proclamatory, evangelical value of acts of mercy and charity, not to denigrate the value of verbal proclamation. In order to preach the gospel at all times, it is necessary to use words.

here’s a core issue with any “Crunchy-adjacent” worldview: it is an attempt to spiritualize what prior generations experienced as suffering — we simply do not struggle to LIVE in the way any of our forebears did, nor do we have to WORK half as hard as they did (eg LAUNDRY!!) —
